Safety
He is four years old the first time he can remember not feeling safe. He’s certain that there have been many times before this one, but this is the one he remembers. The wind outside is screeching, picking at the hotel room. It bashes at the door and rattles the window. They’re in Okalahoma and he’s afraid it’s a tornado despite Dean’s assurances that it’s only a storm.
He has a pillow over his head, pulling it down around his ears as he tries to shut out the sound of the storm. He thinks this is the worst it can get, buffeting at the building so that it feels as if it will be shaken from its foundations and lifted into the air. He’s seen The Wizard of Oz and the Wicked Witch terrifies him.
Then everything goes quiet and Sam knows that this is the worst. In real life no one ever ends up in Oz when chaos goes silent. They end up in a much worse place. Silence is bad. It’s scary and it’s dangerous and it always precedes the worst.
He gets out of bed, dragging his pillow and blanket with him. He’s got his thumb in his mouth and he’s knows he’s not supposed to do that. Babies do that and Sam is not a baby. Immediately at that thought he takes his thumb out of his mouth. He can hear his Dad telling him those very words. Dean is sitting in the living part of the suite, television casting a weird light across his face. Sam can see from the doorway that he’s got the rifle and a squirt bottle of holy water with him. He hesitates because he’s supposed to be in bed. He was supposed to be asleep hours ago. Dean looks at him and Sam is all floppy hair and puppy dog eyes, squeezing his blanket tight to keep from putting his thumb in his mouth. There’s a moment where Sam holds his breath, waits for Dean to tell him to go back to bed.
And then he’s safe. Dean pulls the corner of the blanket on the recliner back and Sam runs, feet thudding across the floor. He scoots in under the blanket and Dean pulls it over the both of them.
Dean’s breath is warm in his hair, he can barely hear Dean’s heartbeat over the television and he knows that this is what safety is. The Wicked Witch can’t get him here; neither can the tornados. Dean will chase them away and keep him safe. That’s Dean’s job.
