character survey of doom

Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is she heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
Helen is 5'9" barefooted. Her build is lean, and has the figure of a in-shape mother.

2. How old is she?
157. Her appearance, minus her hair, hasn't changed since she was 35 in 1886.

3. Describe her posture. Does she carry herself well or does she slouch?
She's a Victorian Woman. Prim, proper, perfect posture. She sits with her legs crossed and stands with her hands crossed in front of her. When she's upset she'll stiffen and sometimes shift her weight around. Or duck her head.

4. How is her health? Is she fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
Good health, in shape, and no medical conditions. They thought her brain was deteriorating in one episode, but it was a hoax.

5. How does she move? Is she clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
Graceful. Again, Victorian Woman. She can run in heels as well.

6. How attractive is this character physically? How does she perceive herself in the mirror?
Helen is a beautiful woman. Two of the most brilliant minds from the 1800s are in love with her, so she is certainly attractive to men looking for that type of woman. Helen herself knows she is rather attractive but doesn't flaunt it. Others are more important, but she certainly dresses herself up nice. Especially when going out in public.

7. Describe her complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
Light skin and a few age lines from being in her mid-thirties. Well, at least looking like she's in her mid-thirties.

8. Describe her hair: color, texture, style.
Dark brown (she was blond in the 1800s with long hair), and hair to the bottom of her shoulders. It is soft and is usually styled curled, but she straightens it or pulls it back when she needs to do her medical job.

9. What color are her eyes?
Blue.

10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
Not really. You wouldn't guess she is as old as she is or was Victorian by just looking at her.

11. What are her chief tension centers?
Her neck. She spends most of her time with her head bowed on a computer or writing or doing some sort of lab work.

12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does she have six of the same suit?
Helen wears all sorts of dark or natural tones. She wears pants and skirts, and dresses back in the day. Usually her skirts are with some sort of jacket. She's been known to have a few scarfs as well. She does have a black rimmed hat that she only wore once. Her field mission gear is a black leather jacket most of the time. Her wardrobe is as extensive and varied as she is, really. She also either has boots or high heels.

13. Do her clothes fit well? Does she seem comfortable in them?
They fit very well. Not form fitting, but they show off her figure. And, given how she dresses, she is pretty comfortable in it.

14. Does she dress the same on the job as she does in her free time? If not, what are the differences?
Her job and free time tend to blend. The only time she dresses fancier is when she has some sort of event to attend.

15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Commando.

Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
Helen has a mid-tone voice with a British accent. Her accent is a softened version of Victorian England, due to how long she's been around. A clip is here from 02x10 Sleepers.

2. How does she normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does she talk easily, or does she hesitate?
She speaks normally, as it say it's a eased tone. She only hesitates when it is a subject she'd rather not talk about. Even then it's just long pauses before she answers. She'll only raise her voice when she's angry or desperate. Or fighting with John or Nikola.

3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
Victorian England (1800s), except softened a bit.

4. What language/s does she speak, and with how much fluency?
Oh boy. English is her primary one. Canon has shown her speaking Latin, Japanese, Italian, Zulu. Though it'd be safe to assume she also knows Spanish, German, French, Russian, and the other languages of where her Sanctuary Network is. Though she wasn't able to translate a certain dialect of Tibetan.

5. Does she switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
Yes. She'll switch to the native language when addressing someone, or will translate for others.

6. Is she a good impromptu speaker, or does she have to think about her words?
Usually impromtu, unless she has to speak carefully to try and avoid a subject.

7. Is she eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
Very eloquent.

Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is she book-smart or street-smart?
Very book smart. She attended Oxford, and her full credentials are "MD. D.T.C.X.B."

2. Does she think on her feet, or does she need time to deliberate?
It all depends on the situation. She'd rather deliberate, but can adapt fast enough to a situation on her feet.

3. Describe the character's thought process. Is she more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
A merge of all of them. She's certainly logical, but also takes in the human element into everything. She is idealistic in the sense of running the Sanctuary Network. Though she does remain practical in knowing that if you kill an Abnormal that you have no idea what it will do to the rest of the planet? It's best to keep it alive and subdued in any possible form (Big Bertha).

4. What kind of education has the character had?
Graduated from Oxford as an M.D. back in the day.

5. What are her areas of expertise? What, if anything, is she interested in learning more about?
Crypto-zoology and exobiology, though she is also (as said above), a medical doctor. She's constantly learning about the things in the world that most humans don't even want to know exist.

In taxonomites she is currently learning to understand how the genetics of the Heroes individuals work.

6. Is she an introvert or an extrovert?
Extrovert, but when it comes to personal things in her past resorting back to the Five, her daughter, or John? Very introverted.

7. Describe the character's temperament. Is she even-tempered or does she have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
She is even tempered but has her moments of melancholy. She's very driven and always active intellectually. The easiest way to set her off is to mention Druitt or Tesla. It'll either result in "Dear God, again" or a gripping fear.

8. How does she respond to new people or situations? Is she suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
Suspicious yet enthusiastic as well. Until things take a turn for the worse. Then comes the hard faced woman.

9. Is she more likely to act, or to react?
Act.

10. Which is her default: fight or flight?
Fight.

11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does she appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
Helen has a very cheeky sense of humor. People who make jokes about her age or how long she's lived OR who she has known? She'll take lightly and laugh along with. She'll also flirt back if given the notion.

12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does she deal with them?
No. They thought she did in Veritas, but that was actually a bug in her head.

13. What moments in this character's life have defined her as a person?
TL;DR AND SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2.
- Her mother died and she was raised by her father. Her father was criticized but would never share with her what he was up to.
- Oxford originally objected her entrance (she was a woman) and begged her father to involve her in his work. Helen was introduced to the first Sanctuary.
- Helen eventually got into Oxford and met Nigel Griffin, Nikola Tesla, John Druitt and Sir James Watson. They formed the Five.
- The Five injected themselves with Vampire blood that unlocked dormant genetic Abnormalities. Helen's was longevity. Her father then locked away the Vampire blood.
- John Druitt ends up having a creature inside him as he teleports that eventually leads to him being Jack the Ripper. It breaks the Five and Helen breaks their engagement off.
- Helen's father disappears and she becomes the head of the Sanctuary Network. And expands it to a world wide network.
- Nigel Griffin is the first of the Five to die.
- She saves Will Zimmerman when he is eight, but not his mother, unfortunately.
- Helen has Ashley in 1980. She is the daughter of John and Helen.
- Helen adopts Henry from a pack of werewolves and raises him as her own.
- In 2008, Helen brings Will into the Sanctuary. They become a target for the Cabal.
- The Cabal trick the Five into getting the Vampire Blood. Sir James Watson dies.
- They brainwash Ashley into taking it and begin to break down the Sanctuary Network with Ashley and her five back up singers genetically altered comrades. Vampire!Ashely.
- Ashley regains control and throws herself into the EM Shield to stop the other vampires. Ashley dies.
- Helen tries to end her long life and learns that the way she wants to basically causes the end of humanity. So, she accepts her long life and continues on.
- The Sanctuary Network believes Big Bertha to be alive, an Abnormal Helen said she killed. They use the trap to catch the Telepath that was trying to sell her for money.
- Nikola Tesla tries to bring back the Vampires and ends up losing his vampire genes.
- John Druitt learns about the thing inside him and teleports away from the Sanctuary with no known destination. Helen is now the only long living member of the Five left.
- Big Bertha is actually alive and after being attacked starts to move tectonic plates. Helen was removed as Head of the Sanctuary Network by Terrance. Season 2 finale ends ARGH.

14. What does she fear?
John Druitt. She loves him, but fears what he'll do to others.

15. What are her hopes or aspirations?
Her hopes are for her work to continue once she actually does die. She wants to help as many as she can before then, of course.

16. What is something she doesn't want anyone to find out about her?
Her Abnormality and how she received it, and her past with John. However in taxonomites this is no hidden fact among certain circles.

Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with her parents.
Her mother died when she was young, but she was very close to her father. He was someone she admired and considered a great man. When he disappeared, it broke her just as much as John's freak out did. It turned out he was somehow frozen and lived onto the 21st Century, but he left again to help Helen not attract so many enemies. She still very much loves him and would rather him stay with her in the Sanctuary.

2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
Single child.

Though in taxonomites, bannered is the closest she has had to a brother figure. They both were screwed over by SCIENCE. She sympathizes with him and understands the need he has to fix his problem, but wants him to just accept it.

3. Are there other blood relatives to whom she is close? Are there ones she can't stand?
Ashley was her daughter, her ONLY daughter.

4. Are there other, unrelated people whom she considers part of her family? What are her relationships with them?
Louis Pasteur was her god-father. Henry is her adopted son, and treats him either as an employee or son given the situation. Will is her protege and she treats him as such, but is still rather distant from them.

In taxonomites, she considers godlikesin, thecheerleader, and bannered. Others that could be considered family at one point is aregulargirl and 10secsofsilence.

5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
She considered Sir James Watson her best friend, until his death. They met in Oxford in 1886, maybe 1885.

In taxonomites, the closest person to a best friend would most likely be survivethemall.

6. Does she have other close friends?
Immediately it would most likely be Will in canon.

In taxonomites, rude_not_ginger is quickly becoming a good friend. chase_evolution is also a good friend and colleague.

7. Does she make friends easily, or does she have trouble getting along with people?
She can make great network connections and business relationships... but trust is something she doesn't give out so easily. Something really has to click in order for them to become friends or more.

8. Which does she consider more important: family or friends?
By this point, Helen considers them almost one in the same. She did crazy things to try and help Ashley, so her direct descendants would probably trump friends.

9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has she been married more than once?
Canonly she is single. She has had several lovers over the century, and was engaged to John Druitt in the 1880s. Next Tuesday (02x08) showed that a potential previous lover was German.

She remains single in taxonomites as well. Though there is a great deal of OOC shipping with Adam Monroe.

10. Is she currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
Nope.

11. Who was her first crush? Who is her latest?
John Druitt was her first love. Currently she has none canonly or in taxonomites. She does adore/admire Adam Monroe and the Doctor, but neither are romantic.

12. What does she look for in a romantic partner?
A gentleman, able to hold an intelligent conversation, and can accept her work and who and what she is. There also has to be some sort of emotional click and endearment in order for it to go a romantic route. Not to mention they have to be as strong headed as she is in order to break down those lovely defensive walls she has built up. Helen basically needs to feel like she can fully open up to the man, even if she doesn't want to.

13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does she relate to them? If no, does she want any?
Daughter: Ashley (deceased). She and Ashley worked together and were close, but at the same time it was hard to relate due to the large generational gap. Finding out her father was alive and was Jack the Ripper also drove them further apart, but they still loved each other.

In taxonomites:
godlikesin has become like an adopted son (much like Henry). She sees a lot of John inside Sylar and desperately tries to help him through all of his problems. Helen of course knows it'll never make up for what happened with John. Relating to Sylar is easier with the fact that Sylar is going to live forever.

thecheerleader is the closest she has to a daughter/grand-daughter figure at the moment. She relates to Claire with being able to live forever, but also knows what it is like having to find her way in the world. She tries to treat Claire as an adult as opposed to a child that has to be protected all the time.

14. Does she have any rivals or enemies?
The Cabal, until John and Tesla sort of killed them all. There are also the random people who try to steal what is in her Sanctuary. Damn pirates. Arr.

15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does she fall on the Kinsey scale?
Heterosexual with a Kinsey Scale of 1. Amanda Tapping has hinted at Helen possibly having female lovers, but it has never been outright stated or named in canon (Amelia picture is not enough, sorry).

16. How does she feel about sex? How important is it to her?
Helen was obviously rather thoughtful about sex, given Ashley was a child conceived out of wedlock. However, Helen has had several lovers, but it is part of being intimate. She isn't a slut and won't sleep with just anyone. There has to be an established relationship and sense of security before she'll allow herself to be open like that again. Thanks, John.

17. What are her turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
An ego like Nikola Tesla's is a big turn off. Kind, intimate and endearing tend to be the traits she falls for. Especially if he's a gentleman.

Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does she fit type?
Helen has no canon birthdate (beyond 1851), so Kira and I figure she is a Virgo. Which fits her right down to the positive and negatives. 1851 is The Pig... which also fits her right down to the T.

2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in her life?
Helen would be spiritual, at the least. She hasn't out right said if she believes in a religion, but she certainly accepts the possibility of an afterlife (she refers to it being "unknown" like the corn field in Field of Dreams). She understands a culture or a person's need for religion and spirituality and doesn't belittle it at all.

3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
Her moral code comes from her father, down to the fact where she refused to kill a dangerous Abnormal because no one knew how badly it could screw over the planet. She believes that everything and everyone should be given a chance to have a place they would call a "sanctuary." And she apparently believes that people can still be helped even after doing horrid things (i.e. John Druitt).

The most compromising she has ever done would be when she's faced with being alone. Helen nearly threw out the realm of possibility when trying to prove Ashley was still alive, and even brought John back with a crash cart, despite the fact he had just murdered a woman and nearly killed her.

4. How does she regard beliefs that differ from hers? Is she tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
Very, very tolerant. Like, it must be a second Abnormality tolerant. Until things start hurting others. Then she cracks down the whip.

5. What prejudices does she hold? Are they irrational or does she have a good reason for them?
She's rather prejudice against John and believes that he had to have the capability to kill before he actually went nuts. She is slightly jaded against the world outside her Sanctuary as well, given the fact they refuse to admit what exists exists.

Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is she rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
Seemingly very rich. No idea where she gets the money from.

2. What is her social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected her?
She was upper-class in the 1800s. Now a days she would probably still be in the upper-class, except she doesn't care about social structures that are outside of the Sanctuary.

3. Where does she live? House, apartment, trailer? Is her home her castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does she share it with others?
The Sanctuary. It's a huge 18th Gothic building in the Pacific Northwest. Great condition. She shares it with an abundance of creatures and humanoids. She collects strays, seriously.

In taxonomites, the building is canon bumped along with her.

4. Besides the basic necessities, what does she spend her money on?
Medical supplies, upgrading systems, and guns and the sort. Though she uses tranquilizer rounds.

5. What does she do for a living? Is she good at it? Does she enjoy it, or would she rather be doing something else?
She takes in the strays of the world and gives them a home. She'd better be good at it, she's been doing it over 100 years. And if you took it away from her, she'd have nothing left. Seriously.

6. What are her interests or hobbies? How does she spend her free time?
Learning, reading, learning, reading...

7. What are her eating habits? Does she skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
She does tend to skip meals due to how she works. She has a wine cellar and drinks it with meals, hardly an alcoholic. Most of the time she probably cooks with it.

In taxonomites, she has grown less likely to skip meals. She has gone into a full on mother mode and cooks for the majority of the residents there now.
