Character Number: first
Character: Jaime Reyes
Fandom: DC Comics
Personality: Generally, Jaime's a laidback and easy going teenager. He may stress out about school, grades, and life in general, but he tries to not let it get him down. He's friendly to pretty much everyone he meets, even if he doesn't exactly like that person too much. In Jaime's view, what kind of place would the world be if everyone spent their time hating each other? It's better to be a shoulder to cry on and encourage the person to strive to become better no matter the circumstances.
As a superhero, however, Jaime tends to be even more snarky and sarcastic than usual. He finally knows what to do (though he's had rough bumps with apologizing to slightly confused rescuees), but he still sucks at public speaking on the spot. He also genuinely feels that it's his duty to save people, and beats himself up mentally when he's not able to help people out.
He knows how to manipulate his powers for the sake of the world too. While he's not as good as Ted Kord (the Blue Beetle before him), Jaime admires his tactics and tries to apply them to his current situations. While he didn't ask to be a superhero, he tries incredibly hard at his job - and needless to say? It's showing, especially with his relationship with the scarab. Jaime and the scarab finally get along well, to the point where Jaime's mostly amused at the scarab's morbid humor.
Jaime's still a kid, though, and he's thus extremely close to his family. Lay a single finger on any member of his large family, and you will face the full wrath of the Blue Beetle. Despite his parents embarrassing him and Milagro irritiating him, he still thinks highly of them and would do anything to save them (as well as Brenda and Paco, who are pretty much extended family). Because of this closeness, his family could easily be considered a weakness as much as they are a strength in Jaime's life.
History:
Overview of JaimeTimeline: after Blue Beetle #36
Abilities: Jaime's an incredibly intelligent boy for his age who can come up with decent strategies to use in battle. He could also probably defend his life in a pinch, as epicness tends to run in the Reyes family. However, the most important thing to note about Jaime is that he also has a piece of alien technology - a blue beetle scarab - wielded to his spine.
- The scarab acts as armor for Jaime; it can create clothes from dead skin cells and other material lying around (so yes, that means it's pretty icky to watch)
- It has laser cannons! Its default setting is non-lethal (which Jaime created himself), but the scarab is more than capable of taking enemies out
- It's skilled at hacking and other technological-related things; it even comes with its own built-in printer, much to Jaime's dismay
- It can translate languages and pretty much act as a cultural guide; Jaime learns about the larger DCU through the scarab, who has access to millions of databases - barring Batman's, of course - throughout the world
- It generally amplifies any natural ability Jaime has and allows him to fight in battle without repercussions. Jaime is its master and the one who acts as the scarab's conscience.
- The scarab won't hurt nature unless it's absolutely necessary--and even then, it'll grumble about it for months to come.
- Only Jaime can hear the scarab because it sends thoughts directly to Jaime's brain. Even the Teen Titans with their superhearing can't hear it and think Jaime's got an imaginary friend.
- Most importantly, the scarab and Jaime can't be parted; it will severely hurt Jaime and make him vulnerable.
Without the scarab, Jaime's an intelligent Hispanic-American teenager who's fluent in both Spanish and English and has a basic knowledge of healing medicine and drugs (his mom's a paramedic, so she taught him).

Jaime's the guy in the circles! (His costumed form, the Blue Beetle, is also seen in these pictures--he's the guy who looks like the Mexican masked wrestler.)
Sample writing: Ten minutes until class ended and Jaime could finally - finally! - return home to wrestle the TV back from Milagro's clutches. God bless his baby sister, but he and Paco had cornered the market on Dragon Age: Origins and by God, they were going to play it today! (His kid sister's marathon of My Little Pony be darned.)
He pressed his lips together, trying to tune back into the teacher's lecture. What was she even speaking about again? Something about the Opium Wars? Jaime felt horrible for admitting it, but he'd completely lost track of the conversation. Judging by the kids sleeping in the back, he wasn't alone. Jaime cupped his chin and leaned forward.
Dragon Age could wait. Right now, he had to be the responsible kid and at least attempt to listen to the lecture---even if he really wanted to be anywhere else but here. (At least he tried. Tried being the keyword.) Bliss was ignorance, it seemed, because the teacher kept droning on. Jaime caught snippets here and there - mainly about how the poor Chinese were oppressed by the English - before the fated bell finally rang and everyone packed up their backpacks for the end of the day. Finally! Sweet freedom!
Without a second glance back, Jaime picked up his books and headed to his locker. Good things came to those who wait, his mom used to tell him whenever he was frustrated. Well, Jaime mused, he supposed he'd have to tell his mom that she was right at the dinner table. This time around, he got a peaceful day without supervillains and Dragon Age. Grinning as he met up with Paco, Jaime made a mental note to keep pleasing the karma meter. As far as he was concerned, he was definitely on a roll.

Sample journal entry: [voice; Jaime sounds a little frazzled, as he's running with the communicator from one point of town to the other] Dios mio...! When they said that they were having one of those "crazy ten minute sales," they didn't tell me I'd be stuck squarely in the middle of it.
[there's the sound of something being thrown; people screaming overpower him for a minute--wait a second, is that static? Hurriedly, Jaime pulls away from the crowd]
Guys, I know you wanted me to grab a movie from the store for movie night, but it's totally going to have to wait. I think we'd have better luck traveling to Mars at this rate. And KD, for once, completely and totally - HEY! - agrees.
