Character Name: Quote
Character Series: Cave Story
Character Age: Unknown, older than 10 years and looks to be about his early teens.
Background: Quote awakens in an underground cavern with no memory of how he came to be there (or even his name), steals a gun called the Polar Star from a sleeping hermit gunsmith, and then proceeds to fall out of the air into a village. The Mimiga Village is populated by rabbit-like creatures called Mimigas, and currently only six remain, and Quote quickly gets up to learn he's fallen out of the sky onto one of them. The Mimiga introduces himself as King, the head-honcho of the scarcely populated village, he mentions a girl by the name of Sue, and Quote leaves his side to do a little exploring. Jumping into the reservoir he finds a silver locket, and upon leaving finds Toroko and follows her outside the door. King demands that Toroko gives him the key to her elder brothers house and she refuses--running straight into him and tackling him into the ground.
Quote heads down to an abandoned Shack by the corner of the village and out pops Toroko, fists flailing as she runs right at him. Opening fire with the Polar Star, Quote shoots, yes shoots, the little Mimiga girl. Calmed down and completely unharmed, they have a civil conversation about the real threat of the floating island they're on--the Doctor. Toroko tells Quote of how the Doctor has kidnapped most of the other inhabitants of their village, even going as far to kill some of them--like Toroko's elder brother. Toroko notices her lost pendant in Quote's hands, but allows him to keep it, just in time for a large lunchbox/toaster by the name of Balrog to break the door in with a battle cry of "Huzzah!" and a floating mage-girl by the name of Misery to appear in the air.
Misery kidnaps Toroko, mistaking her for a girl named Sue, and Balrog and Quote fight until Quote is declared the winner. Balrog jumps through the roof and Quote sets off to the Graveyard to pick up the key to Arthur's House by his grave. Successfully gaining entry to the house, Quote sets up co-ordinates for the teleporter beside the computer and teleports to the Egg Corridor. A few dozen monsters later Quote finds Sue--a Mimiga, trying to pick a fight with a large brute of a Mimiga by the name of Igor. With the old left-hook right-hook he knocks her out cold, grabs her Tarzan style, and takes her off to his hideout while Quote just watches.
Eventually finding them, Quote beats the snot out of Igor and rescues Sue and they go back to Arthur's House via teleportation. Going ahead, Sue talks to her brother Kazuma over the computer, but they're interrupted by King grabbing her and putting her in a cage, blaming her for Toroko's kidnapping. Quote heads to Grasstown via teleporter to rescue Kazuma, and after two boring fetch quests, a battle with Balrog, a battle with Balrog turned into a giant frog, Quote gets a robot named Malco to create a bomb to blow open the door that's locked Kazuma inside. A Professor by the name of Booster comes from the previously malfunctioned teleporter and the three return back.
Sue's managed to convince King to let her go, telling him of the Doctor forcing Mimigas to eat red flowers to turn them into weapons for war. The Doctor plans to unleash the enraged Mimigas onto the Earth below and rule the world. Professor Booster informs the group that the Doctor has located the red flowers in an area called the Sand Zone, he then goes on to say that Quote is a scout robot sent to the floating island 10 years ago, and he's the perfect one to destroy the red flowers.
Entering the Sand Zone Quote meets a blonde girl named Curly Brace, who looks similar to himself, and fights her off, she tells him she is a robot as well and that she mistook him for an evil robot sent to kill the Mimigas. Like Quote, she can't recall her past, and Quote takes the puppy in the back of their house and heads off. He eventually stumbles across Misery and she summons a monster named Omega for him to fight. After defeating the monster he goes down to Jenka's House and returns her puppy, she sends him off on a 4-more-puppy fetch quest, and during the last puppy, Balrog roughs her up and steals the key to where the red flowers are kept away.
Quote enters the storehouse to find King dead on the ground and Toroko suffering the painful transformation of having eaten a red flower. The Doctor is standing by with Misery, and recognizes Quote as a soldier from the surface before forcing the frenzied Toroko to fight him. Winning, Quote takes King's sword before leaving him to resume his journey.
Balrog then falls from the sky and squishes Quote into the ground and Misery banishes the two of them to the Labyrinth for all eternity. After a bit of maneuvering Quote meets up with Curly again, fights a ghost called Pooh Black in an abandoned pharmacy, fights a cat in a giant rolling robot called Monster X, ignores Professor Booster falling from the sky, beats on Balrog, forces Balrog to move a huge rock, and the three of them escape the Labyrinth successfully... only to move on to the next stage of the Labyrinth, Labyrinth M, into a huge den of monsters. With Curly by his side Quote manages to get through in one piece and the two stumble upon a large room, the Core room.
Quote happens upon a tow rope at the far end of the room, and he and Curly face the very Core of the floating island. Misery appears after its defeat with the Doctor and they rush to contain it before the island falls to the surface. The room fills with water, and with his air depleting, Quote is at a loss, until Curly gives him her air tank, sacrificing herself for him. He ties her to him and escapes to the Waterway. With Curly on his back eh finds a room and learns how to drain the water from her system, allowing her to reboot. Taking Curly on his back again, he journeys deeper into the Waterway until Quote fights a giant fish named Ironhead, and they become separated.
Quote awakens in the Mimiga Village, alone, and finds Professor Booster in Arthur's House, he gives him the Booster 2.0, allowing him to move in the air for a few moments. Professor Booster tells Quote of the Doctor getting his hands on the Mimigas and the red flowers, and Quote heads off to do some mini-quests. Returning to the hermit gunsmith's cave, he throws a fit until he see's how much Quote has used his gun and decides to complete it, creating the Spur, and giving it back to him. New gun in hand, Quote heads to the Egg Corridor, which has been completely destroyed. There he fights The Sisters, two twin dragons, before meeting with Kazuma and his newly-hatched sky dragon. Quote refuses his offer to leave the island with him, and climbs up the Outer Wall of the island.
Entering into the Plantation, Quote meets an amnesiac Curly, and a being called Cthulu beside her, he tells Quote to find a special mushroom to help her regain her memory. He finds the mushroom, Ma Pignon, in the Graveyard of the Mimiga Village, and jams it in Curly's mouth. Her memory regained, she remembers that they were sent to the island to save the Mimigas, and Quote's real name, which he did not know until now. She gives Quote the Iron Bond--a symbol of their trust as partners, and Quote leaves to find Sue and the others. Trying to work a teleporter, Quote gets thrown into the jail with Sue and the others, when he awakens Sue and the other Mimigas are gone, taken for the Doctors experiments. Reading a note in his pocket from Sue, she tells him the story of how she and her family came to be on the island, and how the Doctor followed them to get the Demon Crown which resided on the island.
The crown, once belonging to the ruler of the island, grants monstrous magical ability to it's wearer, making the Doctor nearly unstoppable. The Doctor plans to rule the surface world and use the floating island as his base, sending the frenzied Mimigas down to the surface to attack the humans there. Quote finds Sue's mother, Momorin, and finds her the necessary tools to create a rocket to get him up to the Doctors throne. Riding the rocket upward past some Death Traps, Quote enters the Final Cave and maneuvers through red death spikes and whatnot until he finds the Red Demon, defeats it, and emerges victorious onto the Balcony.
In the Throne Room, Quote fights with Misery then goes up a level to fight with the Doctor, who has created a Red Jewel made from the red flowers to increase his power. After defeating him once, he goes insane with power, turning into the Macho Doctor, which Quote defeats as well. He goes up another level and the Doctors spirit takes over the Core, changing it to the Undead Core, and morphing Misery and Sue into monsters to fight alongside him. After the long battle, the Core is now destroyed, leaving the island to fall. Sue and Quote go to escape, but Quote makes a pit stop and falls through the floors of the Prefab House and into the depths of the floating island...the Sacred Grounds. It even has a little handy welcome sign; "Welcome to Hell!"
Maneuvering through the area, Quote eventually stumbles upon Curly and takes her along on his back, once she awakens she helps Quote fight with a powerful weapon called the Nemesis. The two take down angelic monsters together while the back story of Jenka and her brother Ballos is retold occasionally;
"Did you know that the witch-woman Jenka once had a brother? His name was Ballos. Like his sister, he wielded powers far beyond those of mortals. He used his magical powers to help and guide people, and the people loved and trusted him in return. Even more than they did their own king... The jealous king had Ballos apprehended and thrown into prison, where his punishment was brutal and cruel. Humans can be terrible creatures indeed... Under the extreme cruelty of the torture, Ballos' magical abilities finally ran wild. The king was engulfed in the swirl of magic and destroyed in an instant. In a single night, the kingdom that Ballos so loved was reduced to ashen ruins.
It was Jenka's daughter Misery who made Ballos create the Demon Crown. She was subsequently cursed by the crown, forced to do the bidding of all who wear it. If the crown is destroyed, the curse is lifted. However... Even if the crown is destroyed, it will only rise again every time, so long as Ballos yet lives. Such is the strength of his soul that permeates the crown."
Quote defeats a gigantic Heavy Press that falls through the floor, walking along the Corridor until Ballos' puppy speaks, telling him to kill his master and free Misery. Quote and Curly fall into the Seal Chamber and fight Ballos, then his second form, and then even third until he finally falls at the hands of their teamwork. Ballos' defeat halts the falling of the floating island and as a final gift...the walls start to close in on our two heroes. Balrog jumps down from the ceiling in time and flies the two out and into the skies. With the curse lifted from Balrog and Misery, they are free, and Balrog, Quote, and Curly decide to live in peace with each other after all that they're been through, and fly off into the skies.
Personality: Quote is the ordinary silent protagonist in his game, but there is more to him than just that. Being a freethinking robot he makes his own decisions, but his robotic sides kicks in when being given orders by those he knows and trusts. While he is quiet, his actions speak for his personality, and one can quickly tell that he isn’t just a normal robot. He learns more as he travels, and grows from the different experiences he has with the people he meets and the trials he goes through. He possesses a respect for animals, and is also a very kindhearted individual...for one, y'know, lacking a heart.
He is respectful of people around him as well, and dislikes resorting to violence or battles unless it is necessary, except in a select few situations, like shooting Toroko to calm her down. He has a heart of gold, and always does what he feels is best for those around him, even if they don’t like the idea themselves. Though his quiet nature makes it hard for him to meld into a group, that doesn't mean he is unfriendly towards others, just more reserved. He doesn't let loneliness get the better of him and prefers to travel alone, but when it comes to teamwork, the only partner he'd trust with his back is Curly due to how much they've been through. Being put in an embarrassing situation, Quote acts like any boy would--fleeing the scene.
Having been put in two awkward situations relating to girls, Quote’s way of dealing has always just been leaving the area, showing his definite lack of skills romantically. He’s fairly patient though, and, if given the chance to learn, could probably develop lasting relationships with other robots and humans alike. Unfortunately though, he's not the sharpest pencil in the box when it comes to strange occurrences happening, when faced with talking rabbits and cockroaches, he regards them as the most normal things a robot could ever see. While fairly mature, he's innocent in the sense he can't see something as being threatening or 'evil' unless it smacks him in the face (and sometimes, it takes even more than that).
Abilities: Quote gains a wide variety of weapons on his journey, for easy-reading, I've compiled them in list-form;
Spur - a gun that can fire a powerful laser when charged up
Super Missile Launcher - launches multiple missiles, but has limited ammunition
Fireball - a gun that fires blue fireballs that roll along the ground
Bubbler - fires bubbles around Quote as a sort of protective shield, the bubbles launch themselves forward when too many gather at once
Nemesis - powerful, but when fully leveled, it's reduced to shooting rubber duckies...literally
He also has an air-tank that enables him to breath underwater, and a tow-rope that enables him to attach others to him for carrying purposes. He has a booster that allows him to hover upward and diagonally in small distances for less than a minute. In place of ears he has green audio receptors that work in place of ears, these will probably also be taken away come his entry into Mayfield. He's also got a little skill of jumping three times his own height.
