IC Information:
Name: William Birkin
Fandom: Resident Evil
Timeline: Shortly after he injects himself with the G-virus
Age: 36
Appearance:
Erotic Okay no,
this is usually what he looks like.
Abilities: Genius-level intellect. Fantastic fake-crying abilities with bonus puppy-dog eyes. Complete ability to shut off his feelings and conscience at will. Okay, truth be told, he's a completely normal human who has about as much of a chance of winning a fight as a snowcone winning a fight against a flamethrower. But with the G-virus in his system, he's abnormally strong, has the ability to heal himself from near-death in favor of getting more and more infected. Also, he has claws and teeth and a gigantic eye on his arm. However, he loses most if not all of his intellect and humanity.
Personality: Birkin is quite well-known for having an obsessive, bipolar personality. He views his G-virus as the end-all-be-all of his career and, considering it’s his life’s work, will do rather foolish things to make sure it remains in his possession. Foolish things being, namely, getting shot for the sake of protecting it. He's a pretty dumb genius all things considered. Being a work-a-holic, he will sometimes forget to do simple things like eat and bathe and sleep when he gets too involved in his work. Birkin’s also a certifiable genius and is quite proud of that fact and holds animosity toward anyone who damages his pride, and when that happened once with Alexia Ashford he never let the grudge go. His obsessiveness even filters into his friendship with Albert Wesker, who he would gladly jump in front of a bullet for despite obviously not needing to, partially because he views Wesker as his only True Friend who will give back what he gets (spoiler alert, no Wesker won't) but also because he views Wesker as his greatest scientific achievement other than his Precious G-Virus because he helped make the virus that allows Wesker to dodge bullets and have red eyes and Matrix hax and so on.
Birkin is also extremely paranoid and automatically assumes that everyone and their mother is after his work and will stop at nothing to get it, so he has difficulties trusting people even when they are in fact trying to help him and it's lead him to have a pessimistic outlook on life, though occasionally he'll put on a happy face if he has to. He gets sarcastic and caustic with people as a defense mechanism to hide the fact that he's pretty terrified of whatever's going on at the time.
Birkin more than likely has a mental disorder along the lines of psychopathy and a and his personality traits tend to fall in line with that. He can be very charming when he wants something from someone, whether it's a few dollars, a date, or the ability to inject a killer zombie virus into their arm, but it's all a form of manipulation. He's not above bribing people to get what he wants, especially if what he wants is scientific in nature. He tends to blame other people when he gets caught doing something wrong, even pointing fingers at people he cares about (Wesker, and to a lesser extent, his family). He has an extremely short fuse and can go from screaming to hysterical crying to fine in a matter of minutes. But unlike most sociopaths, Birkin is mostly honest. He'll certainly lie, but he's more of the sort of person who would simply rather not tell the whole truth. However, he's in deep denial about his mental problems and will lash out at anyone who calls him anything less than perfectly mentally stable. On the flip side, he knows that he's a monster and will simply laugh off most insults that have nothing to do with his sanity.
He can be a bit of a braggart, yet at the same time, he's an introvert and suspicious of telling people too much. When questioned about things, he tends to get agitated very quickly because he's Smarter Than You and Knows What He's doing. In a lot of ways, Birkin is your typical nerdy mad scientist with a grudge. He tends to be fairly shy until he knows people really well. He tends to need a lot of praise and attention/affection to make himself not be completely jealous of anyone and everyone someone he likes ends of talking to. And his jealousy often manifests itself violently. Like, for example, killing a certain Dr. Marcus over trying to get at his research.
His relationship with his wife and daughter was hands-off at best, neglectful at worst. He put nearly everything else in his life above the two of them. Birkin claims that he loves them and would do anything for them, but they're just words. He would do a lot for Annette and Sherry, but only if it actually benefited him in some way. He cares more about Sherry than his wife, but because of his obsessive attitude towards his work, he rarely got to see her. Annette, at least, worked at Umbrella with him so they were able to interact more and have something of a real relationship, albeit something more akin to close coworkers than husband and wife.
History: Birkin is one of the youngest scientists Umbrella has ever hired. He started working there at the tender age of 15 in 1977. He became good friends with his fellow researcher, Albert Wesker, during their training thanks to the fact that they were both radically younger than their co-workers.
During the first few years he was working, he developed a Bio-Organic Weapon (B.O.W.) known as the Hunter; one of the first successful B.O.W.s. After killing one of the founders of Umbrella, James Marcus, he was promoted to head researcher of the T-virus project.
One of his test subjects, a young woman named Lisa Trevor, had managed to internally make a rather disgusting menagerie of the various injections that she acted as a guinea pig for Umbrella over the years, prompting Birkin to perfect this new virus, which he dubbed the G-virus. In the early 90s, he was granted permission to start the project with the assistance of his wife, Annette.
By 1998, he had completed his research and planned to sell the perfected G-virus to the U.S. Government after a few disagreements with his superiors. However, he never got the chance to, thanks to a paramilitary squad being sent to steal his research by whatever means necessary. “Whatever means necessary” turned into multiple bullet wounds, which turned into a last ditch effort to live by Birkin. He injected himself with his own virus and turning himself into a hideous monster. After killing his wife an attempting to infect his daughter Sherry, he was finally destroyed by Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield.
Roleplay Sample - Log: Drip. Drop. Drip… It was truly strange the sorts of things the mind decided to pick up on when the body was completely sleep deprived. He really should get that faucet fixed at some point. Not now though. He couldn’t trust anyone in his lab other than he and his wife and some simple repair man? Absolutely not! They would have so very much to gain from stealing his virus, his research, his life maybe even! And he just couldn’t have that. No, no… Birkin took a deep shuddering breath. All that coffee was not doing a single thing for his paranoia. Yes, he might have been able to keep odd hours a bit easier, but, the extra adrenaline in his system was not making actually getting things done any easier.
Drip. Drop. Drip… Christ, that stupid leak was so loud. Umbrella’s higher-ups probably rigged the damn thing to steadily drive him insane. He wouldn’t put it past them at this point, couldn’t put it past them… Who knows what they’d try next? Self-righteous bastards had no idea, no idea that no matter what the hell they did to him, they would never get his life’s work. He wasn’t just going to hand it over. No, they didn’t deserve to have it. They were barely worthy to be used as test subjects!
Birkin’s hand wandered down to his labcoat pocket, fingering the handgun he’d taken to keeping in there. No, they wouldn’t get it. They wouldn’t. He wouldn’t let them, and no amount of training can usurp biology. Soldiers or not, humans cared more for their sense of self preservation than anything else, and it took a true idiot to stand up to a ‘madman’ with a gun. But then, Umbrella didn’t always hire the cream of the crop. There was a certain little bitch who came to min-
No, best not to think about her. She was rotting in her grave by now and wasn’t even worth the electricity needed to fire off neurons to remember her. And he didn’t have the time to waste on having a fit. He just needed to focus and ignore the shaking of his hands and the pounding of his head. No huge deal; he’d done it many nights before.
Roleplay Sample - Journal: What the hell is going on here? This doesn’t feel like Umbrella’s work, but… [Ahem] Does anyone here have any sort of idea as to what happened? I’m not asking for the whole story; I don’t particularly care really, but, uh, the general idea would be a nice thing to get a hold of sooner than later. Viral outbreak? Nuclear bomb going off? Some bastard drugging me and dragging me here to try and steal my G-Virus from me?! [Considering his voice rose in pitch a bit at the end, he realizes that he’s not exactly being as calm as he’d like to be and after a few deep breaths starts up again, not even bothering to hide the fact that he’s rather obviously gritting his teeth] I would greatly appreciate it if I could maybe possibly get some kind of idea as to why the fuck I’m here. Thank you very, very much.
This game includes horrible mental and physical torture of your character. After reading the rules/faq for clarification, how do you expect your character to handle this and continue to function? Well at first I'm going to have him come in as a horrible mutated monster of death which will be a lot less mentally draining on him. However, in order for him to go back to normal, someone'll need to kill him first, and he'll still technically be infected, just in a more human body. Which would usually be great! and a sign of awesome success! but if/when he ever gets injured even so much as a papercut, the infection will spread because it mutates through healing dead cells. And basically it just goes in a cycle of him getting more and more infected every time he gets hurt, and resetting every time he dies.
