I was quite amused and intrigued upon discovering this headline in my morning's paper: How Breweth Java with Jesus. Yep, got my attention.
Not that I could clearly tell you what I was expecting from such a headline, but I was quite disappointed to discover the actual point:
Starbucks plans to join the ranks of commercial religion proponents, by way of the following assertion on their cups: You were made by God and for God, and until you understand that, life will never make sense.

here. I do not appreciate the tone of this sentiment. It's all well and good, reassuring even, if one shares that perspective. For others who do not, well, it's a little like telling them, "You're blind." To me, it's entirely condescending. I wouldn't like this on a bumper sticker, where I'd much more expect to see it than on a Starbucks coffee cup.
I am quite aware that other commercial entities (e.g. Hallmark, In 'N Out) have religious subtexts, broadcasted in varying volumes, but it's different to have built up from such a foundation. Starbucks, on the other hand, seems to be in it for the alleged marketing advantage.
I have always liked Starbucks. Huge corporation aside, they've got a good brew. And hell, a few minutes prior to finding this article, I had just read an ad alerting me to their support of Fair Trade production.
So, I'm disappointed. I'd prefer not to be reminded how many strangers out there think I'm going to Hell for not sharing their beliefs...when all I wanted was a cup of coffee.
Some things should be left separate.
