Things had gotten worse. She hadn't thought that anything could get worse after her father and the uncles all disappeared, but it hadn't stopped.
Sherwood was gone. She didn't know when it happened, just at some point when she wasn't as aware of things as she should be, something had swallowed up the forest that had been her home and now there was just blackness. Reports were coming in from all over the land about the same thing happening.
Gwynn paced the floor of the room that the council had taken over to make plans for times of war, and at this thought she was struck with the urge to start laughing. War? How did one make war on something that looked to be sent by the Lord himself? How did one make war on something like the storm of darkness that was destroying their country?
She hadn't been a friend of the Lord God before and at this moment she wasn't inclined to change that relationship, but there were others to think of.
She stopped pacing, holding up a hand to stop the advisor who was running off at the mouth and turned to give a sad look to Tim and Eve, who had stayed with her through all of this. Her best friend, a sister, really, and her love.
"You should go home." Her voice was hoarse from shouting orders over the last few days and too little rest. "This is not your world and you two should not die with us." She swallowed, looking from Eve and then to Tim. "Maybe ... maybe there is something you can do to prevent this from happening to your worlds."
She was beyond tired physically and her spirit was just about broken. Too much loss in too few days was not something that she had ever been prepared to deal with.
"Perhaps the two of you can get to Fandom before ... and I'll find Richard so he knows that we tried."
Eve started to protest with a glare, but Gwynn would never know what she was going to say because one of the knights in the room asked a question that caused that last something inside her to break.
"Richard who?"
Gwynn turned around to see that the knight who had spoken was not the only one that looked confused.
"What did you say?" Only those that knew her well would have realized just how much danger her tone of voice signified.
The knight was not aware of the injuries that he was causing to the young woman in front of him with his words and his actions. "I don't know anyone named Richard. He's not one of us so why should you die for a nobody?"
Gwynn's sword was in her hand. "A nobody? He is your King! King Richard, and you all swore fealty to him."
"My Lady Hood, there is no King. Not of Briton. We swore fealty to your family, and in their death, you." He shook his head. "We have to get you to safety so that your family lives on."
At the same time that Gwynn wanted to start screaming at the men in front of her, she noticed that it had gotten horribly silent outside.
