We’ll be Alright

When it’s Jack’s turn to break, it happens in agonizing slow motion. It isn’t the day she saves an old woman from an apartment building and has to go to the hospital after too much smoke inhalation. It isn’t even the night, months later, when they fail to save a homeless little boy and his dog in a warehouse fire. When it does happen, when Sam realizes that all this time he had been unraveling all along-when he finally breaks-it’s three days after they lose Ferretti.

Sam doesn’t notice at first, but when they’re in bed together, at her place, she finally sees that he’s changed.

She wakes him from a nightmare in the middle of the night, and he looks at her-really looks at her-eyes haunted and red-rimmed, sweat beading across his forehead. Sam touches his face and he rolls toward her, desperation flashing in his dark eyes. Jack captures her lips with his own as his body moves on top of her, hands roaming, grasping forlornly.

Her senses are on fire along with him, the weight of his warm, hard body pressing her into the mattress. She welcomes this, in her desire to forget all the loss they’ve experienced, but when Jack whispers a hoarse, “I love you,” against her neck, she realizes that he’s not trying to forget. He’s trying to remember; to savor. He’s trying to savor her.

When his intentions meld with her own, she feels his emotional need, she experiences it. She wants to savor him, too. She wants to bask in this wonderful thing between them, and never let it go; never let anything tear them apart.

It’s in this instant, when she feels him, hard and ready at her inner thigh, and he enters her, that Sam sees that he is finally breaking. And as he breaks apart, she mends him, holding him to her without letting go. She throws her head back and adjusts the angle of her hips as he kisses her neck and pumps into her-slowly, leisurely-reveling in their moment.

“I love you, too,” she returns sincerely as their rhythms synchronize, her heels hooking at the backs of his thighs. Even though Sam knows they’ve never needed these words before, that they still don’t, she also knows that this is right, and just sometimes words and actions can speak loudly together.
