The New Mirror of Twilight

It had taken her almost a year. Collecting the materials, creating the shiny crystalline disk, and the months of painstakingly etching the sigils into the surface, one by one. She had had her share of headaches, painful misapplications of posture, and that horrible blown-out feeling where her powers had been stretched just a little too far and her very soul was sore. Hopefully soon, it would all be worth it.

A seven-foot-diameter, beautiful machine, projector, focus. Everything. This was what was going to get her back home, if all went well. Her power, channeled through the lens of a parabola with its focus in another world.

If the exertion didn't kill her, that is.

She didn't dare touch it; precision that the aerospace industry would envy had gone into the construction of the thing, and she wasn't going to risk subjecting it to something so horrible as a smudge. She simply stared at it, into it, into her reflection as it hung suspended above the floor. A reflection that stared back through the etched imprint of the triforce in the center.

She had to talk to Snake. To... to let him know she had to go. To say goodbye? Maybe, but maybe not; actually she had no clear idea of what the mirror would do when she charged it. Whether it would simply work once and shatter, or open a permanent link to the Twilight realm, or whether she would even live to see what would happen, as the blasphemy inherent in creating something only Goddesses had made before wasn't lost on her. In any case the odds of ever seeing Snake... no, David, again would not be good. Her reflection swallowed as she felt her heart fall into her stomach. Gods. What WAS it with her? One would think that leaving a man behind was the way she showed she loved them, by now--

She turned away and opened a portal, dissolving into it the way she always did. She'd come this far, and this was something she had to do. Even that made it sound like a mere errand, a check-box to be filled on a list. This was more than that. She had to go back and be a queen, because deep down she knows she sure as hell wouldn't be much good at being anything else.
