Rilo Kiley with the Brunettes and Okkervill River @ Workplay (6/09/05)

Jun 13, 2005 18:20

Beyond greatness, really. (Well, except for Okkervill River...)
Kendra and I left for Workplay around 6:00 PM, and of course we were pushing it. We got lost a few times. It wouldn't make the trip complete if we didn't. We arrived at Workplay around 8:00. Luckily, the Brunettes had not taken the stage. We managed to get a spot in the "second" row. It couldn't even be deemed that, because in the pit there is no order, and people eventually shove their way up to wherever they please. The kids in front of us were all right. It was mostly all girls and this one guy. He was perhaps the coolest out of all of them, because he actually socialized with Kendra and me. We laughed at pathetic things, you know that sort of lot.

This song ^ is pure brilliance. It's about Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, and they wear masks. ha ha...Too great.

The dance contest. NEXT time, we will be the victors.

So, the Brunettes take the stage and the first song they play is the "Baby" song. I'm sure that's not what it's called, but it's perhaps my favorite, cause it's very YMCAesque. They spell out B-A-B-Y, and it has lots of clapping. It was fun! The Brunettes hail from New Zealand, and they remind me a lot of Sons and Daughters, but with a 60s pop twist. They all enjoy being on stage, and they have so many fun instruments. For example, a triangle, a trumphet, a xylophone, one of those whistle things where you pull the end out, etc. They did have the dance contest, but we lost to the girls in front of us. Or rather one of them proclaimed to be the winner. Kendra and I blame it on the constraining enviroment. We didn't have enough room to dance. Otherwise that girl SO would have lost, because we planned the dance out on the way back home. Let's just say it incorporated Napoleon Dynamite moves, and a little robot break dancing. HECK YES, we would have won. Next time...ho ho ho

Check out the Brunettes though! You'll thank me later.

A few of the guys from the Brunettes joined them for some song. (above)

lead singer of Okkervill River

This next band...Yikes. Okay, Okkervill River is their name. I try to be a fair individual when it comes to bands, but this band was downright horrible. Maybe their album is better, but live they were absolutely dreadful. They droned on and on. It was so bad that the guy who was on slide guitar had to tell people when to applaud. Like, there was this solo, and after it he goes, "OH COME ON! That was good shit!". No. No, it wasn't. And the singer was so pretentious and full of himself. He was trying to be like Conor Oberst. There's only one Conor man. So, move on. I lost track of time, and the lead singer finally goes, "Okay, we're going to play two more songs. You'll just have to bear through them". Um...You don't say stuff like that unless you truly suck, and they, my friends, certainly did. So, if you ever see this band, refrain. If you like this band, I apologize, but they are horrible live.

Rilo Kiley took the stage a bit after that, and they opened up with "It's A Hit". They even brought Harry (trumphet player from the Brunettes) back out. He was fun, and he was completely smashed. Everytime we saw him he had another brand of beer in his hands. I didn't get the setlist, but they played the usual stuff. Jenny even debut a new song. I think it may be on her solo album. She said, "I'm going to play a new song for you. If you don't like it...Well, don't tell me". It was amazing though. She need not worry. She is extremely talented. Blake was HI-larious. He was talking about the Spurs game, and then he cut his finger. "I'm going to walk this mother off!!!" He told us about how they had went to the Birmingham Fishmarket, and they all ate fried catfish. ha ha...He said, "It was tremendous!". He kept saying that. "TREMENDOUS!" He talked about how great Birmingham was, and how he loved the houses on the hills. This girl standing next to me goes, "OMAHA, is better!", and he goes, "No, no it's not. Birmingham is pretty great. I have friends and stuff in Omaha, but Birmingham has got it beat". I think he should come to Mississippi since we're the home of fried catfish, sweet potatoes, and antebellum homes. They finished up the night with "Frug". This girl next to Kendra was asking them to play it, and the girl in front of her was like, "Oh no. Not that song. It sucks". To which the girl replied in a whispered hurt tone, "Hey, I like that song. Shut up...". I think Pierre felt sorry for her, cause he made the call to play it. Go him.

We bought some merch after the show, and I didn't spend that much. I have to share this though. This guy was at Rilo's merch table where they sold vinyl etc. This is the conversation:
Random guy: "Can I get this in a medium?"
Rilo Merch Guy: "Um...that's a record."
Random guy: *disappointed* "Oh..."

BAH HA HA HA...Sorry, it was funny though.

The Brunettes drummer was standing next to me as I was shoving my stuff into the Rilo Kiley totebag. He was trapped in by all the people, and I wanted to say something to him, but I noticed Kendra had run off without me. I was trapped along with him, but I turned and went, "CRAP!" And I ran around this pillar and through the crowd. I think he followed me out, cause Kendra and I walked to the crosswalk, and he was behind us heading towards the van. I would like to think I helped him out of Workplay. Probably not, but just LET ME think that.

Overall, it was a wonderful evening. I would love to see Rilo Kiley when they open for Coldplay, but $65 just doesn't work for me.

I apologize for the crappy pics. I didn't get my usual spot, because we were a bit late, but at least I tried and I edited A LOT.
