The raft was ready. Or at least as ready as they were going to get it. Some logs fashioned together, a rudimentary mast along with a sail and a rudder all made up the raft. Sam was rather proud of it, considering he knew jack about sailing and had determined all of the necessary components out of books he had picked up around the island. The ( Read more... )

"Ahoy Captain!" Coraline yelled, waving at Sam as she bounded down the beach. Coraline saluted Sam with both hands, grinning at him before she looked at their ship. Coraline could have suggested using her kayak but well, really where was the fun in that? "Arrgh we ready to castoff and sail the seven-one sea?"

"You'll surrender the title of captain just like that?" Sam asked, smiling at Coraline and saluting her back.

He liked hanging out with her, she was fun and smart and easy to be yourself around. He felt like he could be as goofy and ridiculous as he wanted and she'd just roll with it. She'd tease him about it, sure, but Coraline would never judge him for it.

"And I'm ready if you're ready."

"Well, a Captain should have one leg and an eyepatch and a parrot and I really like my legs, they're nice legs so if you just stand really, really still we can cut yours off." Coraline said grinning at Sam as she dumped her bag onto the raft. Coraline bounced onto the raft, jumping up and down on it to check out how it held up. "This is a really cool raft Cap'n Sam. Alright lets cast off me hearties! Yo ho! You know if you're a pirate you should probably have a pirate name."

Coraline bounced back and forth before hopping off to help him push the raft out.

"Wait, if I'm Captain why are you giving me orders?" he asked, untying the raft from where he had it tied off so that it wouldn't float away. He waited until the water brought the raft off the beach and then pushed, wading it into the water.

"And I like my legs too. They're quite nice also. You're not the only one with nice legs."

"Because a good second mate knows when to take control so the Captain doesn't have to?" Coraline said making a face as she helped push the raft into the water with Sam. Coraline looked at Sam's legs doubtfully before tilting her head up. "Mine are much longer and less hairy, yours look like spiders have decided to infest them."

Once they were far enough out Coraline pulled herself up onto the raft and swung her legs up onto the raft.

"They do not look like spiders! You know what? You're demoted to cabin boy. Girl. Person. Cabin person!" Sam said as he jumped up into the raft and grabbed on to one of the paddles, trying to push them further away from the shore.

"And your legs are..." Sam glanced at her legs and realized there wasn't even anything he could exaggerate to make her legs sound awful. "Well spiders are awesome anyways! Shut your face."

"If you demote me I'm just going to lead a mutiny against you and then you'll be marooned on a desert island... well, more marooned on a desert island than we already are." Coraline said picking up a paddle and helping Sam paddle them out further. Coraline grinned at Sam when he told her to shut her face. "Spiders are not awesome."

Coraline was not afraid of spiders. Not at all. They just made her immensely uncomfortable. Totally not scared of them. "Spider-legs, spider-legs, does what ever a spider-leg could. Can he swing from a web no he can't cos they're just legs. Lookout here comes Spider-legs," Coraline sang, teasingly at Sam.

"You can't mutiny, you're the only other crew member. Mutinies require secret meetings in the hold of the ship with your confederates," he pointed out. Never mind that he couldn't man the rudder AND the sail at the same time and so he needed her cooperation.

"And your song makes no sense. I could still swing from a web. I can't spin a web is all."

"Just because I'm the only other crew member doesn't mean I can't mutiny. I've been practising when I'm on the Pearl," Coraline said, though really most of her time on the Black Pearl was spent avoiding Captain Jack and Delirium and exploring when she thought she could get away. "And besides we don't have a hold."

Coraline waited for the breeze to pick up a little before unfurling the sail out for Sam. She paddled a bit more before grinning. "So, you're admitting that you have spider-legs. I knew it."

"You've been practicing mutinying?" Sam asked, narrowing his eyes. He wasn't surprised by the admission, not from Coraline. The probably with Coraline is that there was an equally good chance that she was telling the complete truth as she was just making it up for fun.

"I knew I should have checked some of your references closer. Long John Silver and the Dread Pirate Roberts seem good at first, but in retrospect not the most respectable of pirates."

"Of course, if I'm mutinying then I have to be sure I'm doing it right." Coraline said simply, letting the tale spin out a little more. Coraline often made up stories just to see how much attention people were actually paying but Sam usually paid attention. Well more attention than a grown up usually paid. "Well, there's your first mistake there are no respectable pirates."

Coraline grinned, helping Sam paddle out a little further. "I hope you brought an eye patch at least. You should look a little bit piratey. Or rum. Have you tried rum?"

"You know what then? I'm upgrading you to most respectable pirate on the ship," Sam said. That seemed like it would do for suitable punishment, making Coraline the most unpirate-like pirate around.

"And no, I haven't tried rum. I'm especially not drinking rum while out at sea. Real pirates should drink water so they don't get miserably dehydrated and die on the ocean."

They were steadily pulling away from the beach and weren't sinking, which was a real fear he had when it came to his raft. So far the entire journey was a success.

"Nope, I can't be respectable. I've run away lots of times and been grounded and skipped school and destroyed the island, so you're still the most respectable pirate on the boat." Coraline replied, pulling a tongue at him. Coraline turned her head to stare back at the beach getting further and further away. "We're still not far enough."

Hopefully the wind would pick up and then they'd be even further out. Coraline wanted to see the second island again even if it took forever. "I have, it was disgusting. And I had that bubbly stuff and something that was green. See, so you have to be the respectable one. All the grown ups get annoyed when I find the drinks at the parties but if they dont' want me to have one then they should hide them."

Not that she wouldn't find them anyway.

"Please, those are minor things to a pirate," Sam tsked, shaking his head. He hadn't heard about how she destroyed the island, but since it was still there he didn't think she'd done too thorough of a job. Unless there was another island before this one that she destroyed and no one talked about.

"Those are all normal teenage rebellion things. And if they hid them, you'd just whine about how you're old enough to make your own decisions and that they should trust you."

"I do not whine," Coraline said reaching back to nudge Sam with her hand, balancing the paddle on her lap. Coraline pulled her tongue at him childishly for good measure. "And I know how to pick a pocket or two. So, there. That's very piratey. Plus have you seen Captain Jack, he might look like a pirate but all he seems to do is smell like well... weird."

"Hah!" Sam said, pointing at her, as if he had just won some sort of argument, which he felt he had. He had her now.

"You are entirely too clean to be anything less than the most respectable pirate on this ship," he said. "I have face scruff, unruly hair, and I probably smell a little weird. You on the other hand, have none of those things. Face it, you're too pretty to be unrespectable."
