THE CITY: Chicago
PLOT TWISTS: Set in an office in Chicago. The ambitious Protagonist (Cara DeLizia) works part time job-share as a PA at the same company as her Best Friend 2 (Lucy Lawless) who is a Policy Officer. When the opportunity for a transfer to the newly developed Manhattan branch arrises for one of the PAs (the other will remain in Chicago and be promoted to full time position), Rival 1 (William Beckett) will stop at nothing to get the transfer.
Meanwhile The Protagonist falls for the resident bad boy aka The Mistake (Steven Strait) who works in the warehouse, while the introverted True Love (Jensen Ackles) from Accounts Payable pines from the sidelines. Mother (Mackenzie Phillips) and Father (Enrico Colantoni) announce to the family that the daughter Mother gave up for adoption at birth (Ashley Tisdale) during her teens has tracked them down and wants to meet with them. Best Friend 1 (Kevin Jonas) offers support to Protagonist while Brother (Michael Angarano) deals with his unrequited crush on Best Friend.
At the office, Rival 1 is sabbotaging the shared workspace in order to trip up Protagonist, and new employee Rival 2 (Tricia Helfer) assists him in this endevour after realising the reason her advances were spurned by Best Friend 2 is because Best Friend 2 is secretly in love with the Protagonist. In an effort to destroy the Protagonist, Rival 2 steps in and sleeps with The Mistake, conveniently being caught in the act by the Protagonist.
After a heated argument and subsequent break-up with the unrepentant Mistake, the Protagonist spirals into her own mental breakdown. With the encouragement of Best Friend 1,and an amazing shopping trip (shopping solves everything!) as well as the gentle support of True Love, the Protagonist regains her composure and is ready to move on with her life. This is when True Love makes his move and confesses his feelings to the Protagonist.
Meanwhile Sister has been introduced to the family and is planning on staying in Chicago to reconnect with them. As Best Friend 1 and Sister start dating, tension arises between Brother and Sister as they both compete for the attention of Best Friend 1.
The atmosphere at work is heated, Rival 1 still goaling for the transfer and the rumour mill about the events with Rival 2 spreading around the office. Deciding she would rather stay in Chicago with her family and True Love, the Protagonist informs her boss of her decision and informing Rival 1 of the same. Things start to settle down again at work.
A celebration is organised for Rival 1 at a local club. It is here that Best Friend 2 kisses the Protagonist while out on the dancefloor together. Unfortunately the kiss was witnessed by True Love's Best Friend, who informs True Love before the protagonist can explain. True Love leaves the club looking hurt and doesn't answer the protagonists calls. Feeling rejected, best Friend 2 leaves in tears and similarly blocks communication with the Protagonist.
Confused and heartbroken, the Protagonist turns to Best Friend 1 for comfort. Only Best Friend 1 is also dealing with his own love triange with Sister and Brother. In an effort to distract herself, the Protagonist speaks with both Brother and Sister separately about the situation with Best Friend 1, and eventually Brother backs down. Friend 1 talks with Friend 2, who reconciles with the Protagonist. Much hugging ensues.
Life goes on and the Protagonist tries to come to deal with her broken heart. Even Rival 1 offers her the transfer in his place (because, in the true style of a Rom Com, they are now inexplicably friends).
Unbeknownst to the Protagonist, Best Friend 2 speaks to True Love and explains what happened. True Love and the Protagonist apologise and make up and there is kissing.
