"Sorry Julie. I can't come for spring break."

It's a lie, and he hates doing it. He's not so good at lying, so he's glad that this is a phone call rather than in person or even with the webcam. To make himself feel better, he covers up the guilt with a half-truth.

"My sister's in the hospital. Again."

Mags is indeed at the hospital, but it's her appendix, not the usual problem. Of course, she's in on it too. His whole family is in on it and hers. Oph even managed to get a few of her friends in on the plan. It wasn't an easy feat either. There were so many places where someone could've slipped up, spilled the beans, but miraculously, no one, not even Ophrah himself, made Julie any bit the wiser about what was going to happen in approximately forty minutes.

He hangs up the phone, because his bags have just arrived from the carousel. Ophrah tosses them over his shoulder and leaves the airport with one of Julie's friends, Mike. He's excited and nervous as they head to a tiny diner type place. Her friends swear she loves it there, so he figures why not. The table near the back is already reserved. He's ready. He's even written a little song.

He sits down and pulls out the little blue box. He pops it open, staring inside. The ring is platinum and he'd rather not think about just how much money he spent buying it. It was worth it. She's worth it. God he hopes she'll say yes. Though, to be quite honest, asking for Julie's dad's permission was the hardest part. He's a big, intimidating guy. It's hard not to be nervous around him.

Mike turns to tell him that she's just about to enter. Oph urriedly tucks ring and box back into his jacket pocket, pulling the menu up to hide his face, but not his hair. One minute and thirty-eight seconds pass. The longest seconds of his life, he's sure. Julie finally parks her chair next to him. He's still hiding behind the laminated cardstock menu with his hair sticking up.

"Ophrah?!?"
"Suprise!"

She playfully smacks his arm and he bends over, giving her a quick kiss. They catch up, he spills the beans about his sister, but he doesn't let all the secrets out. No, they've got food to eat and he's never had one of those spam sandwiches before. The waitress arrives. He's all set to order when he looks around and notices that Mike and Betsy are gone. Jerks. That wasn't part of the plan. Oh well. He guesses that he'll just have to ask now, since they not so subtly gave him a window of alone time.

To the waitress, he asks, :"can you give us a minute?"

He smiles at Julie, a too wide smile, on anyone else it might be fake, but his smiles have always been that wide.

"Julie?"
"Yes?"

He takes a deep breath and fumbles with his pocket. Ring. Ring. Where did it go? Oh. Duh. Oph tries the other pocket. Success! He slides it over seven inches or so, putting it right next to her, and opens the box again. The words of the song he'd prepared have just floated away, and he doesn't have enough time to come up with something new, so he asks with simple words and holds his breath while waiting for an answer.

"Marry me?"
