[TM] 301 - Wake Up

Sep 24, 2009 19:39

It was just past three in the morning and the only reason she knew that was because it couldn't be more than twenty minutes after the last time he shifted in his sleep. It hadn't woken her up, not completely, but just enough that she'd been able to focus on the red numbers of the clock to see it wasn't three just yet.

He wasn't asleep. He hadn't been sleeping since the shooting, and even before that she knew things were on his mind more than usual. He'd lost a member of his team, Danny had been put in a wheelchair, and the shooter hadn't been caught yet. Mac had given him a month off, and Elle felt like it might've been three weeks too long. Don never did well with sitting around, unless it was the half-time show, or maybe waiting for Sports Center to do a replay of some amazing feat of sporting events history. Just waiting though, that was a different story.

Turning over, Elle propped herself up on her elbow, watching him in his state of fake sleeping, "You're allowed to get up. I heard your pager go off." She watched as he shook his head, trying to pretend like he wasn't really curious which call had accidentally gotten routed to him. The pager had sat silent for four weeks, save for one accidental page two weeks ago.

Leaning forward she pressed a kiss to his shoulder, "I know you can't sit around the house with Fred and me all day. You want to head to the scene, go for it. It might just be another DUI anyway. Then you can come back to bed, and pretend to sleep some more."

His arms circled around her, pressing a kiss atop her head, "Nah, I'll be fine. I'm supposed to be on leave."

Raising an eyebrow she smirked, "Yeah, supposed to be." Twisting around a bit she reached for the remote on the bedside table. Turning the small television on, Elle flipped through the channels until she got to the news. Resting her chin atop Don's shoulder she watched, "Stella just walked into the building. I felt you twitch."

Don shrugged it off, pulling her closer, but Elle pulled away. Sitting up next to him she tilted her head at him, "Don, if Mac doesn't need you he'll send you back. Might as well just go. It's gonna eat at you all morning, then you'll be antsy, and Fred will end up spending all day walking in Central Park while you try and avoid downtown. Save the little guy the sleeping all day tomorrow, and just go."

Folding her arms she stared him down, or at least Elle's version of a stare down with one of New York's finest. Don tried for a while, but eventually he caved in, smirking at her before he got up out of bed and started to get ready.

"Badge is-"

"Top drawer, I know you moved it."

Smirking at him she shrugged, "I plead the fifth. It was never meant for the second drawer anyway. On leave, or not."

Hooking it on the waist of his jeans he moved back to the bed, leaning down to place a kiss atop her head, "I'll be back later."

"I know, and I'll be here. In bed. Sleeping until at least until I have to take Fred out."

Laughing Don moved toward the door, crouching down to pet Fred on the head, "Make sure she gets up before ten."

"Hey! He's on my side. Go to work already." Nodding, he turned and headed off to work leaving Elle to the bed, where she'd drift off to sleep, and then eventually just wake up again.
