"Let us not think that in his new law of mercy, by which He commands us as a father does his children, God has granted us greater license to be cruel to one another." - St. Thomas More, in his argument against the death penalty, published in 1516. Tell me why at least one civilized nation still allows it?

On a completely different note, i was thinking today that if there is a truly american holiday, it's not july 4th. it's the super bowl. seriously, it's the most important cultural event that binds us together as a nation. everyone watches it, even if they dont like football. that kind of shared experience is exactly what forms a nation. i dont know if it's good or bad that our society thinks watching commercials during the super bowl is more sacred than, for example, going to church on christmas, but it is kinda neat.
