It isn't foolish if there is even a small chance of achieving your hope and it is worth the risk of holding on to. After all, if you give up now, you will definitely never accomplish whatever it is.

Then it sounds like you have your answer. If you'd only be able to be happy by either achieving this, or knowing you can do nothing and reaching for another source of happiness, then that is what you must do.
