Tony rarely had the opportunity to check out how the suit handled in a non-life threatening combat situation. Rarely meaning not at all up until now.

So if he was ignoring Jarvis' very annoying warnings about the area and odds of surviving if that shield was thrown properly, it could hardly be blamed on him. So, shield in hand--gauntlet-- he was waiting for Steve to arrive so this could begin.
