OKay, earlier today I left a comment on a friend's LJ, basically wishing her a good time at the fan convention she just arrived at, and asking her to say hello to 'the gang' for me, especially Peter if he was attending. A little bit of background: several years ago I was fairly active fannishly in several different fandoms, most notably Real Ghostbusters, Highlander:TS, and the StarWars LARP group at Media*WestCON. People who rarely saw each other except for at MWC but who communicated via smail-mail, letterzines, YAHOO-Lists/Groups, forming unlikely but enduring friendships, yadda yadda yadda....
Anyway, Peter is one of those wonderful warm and caring people who becomes a BFFL, whether you ever actually see each other again or not (at least, I think of him and Brenda that way),and after leaving that comment earlier I was reminded of the year I'd attended MWC, somewhat down in the dumps because as far as any of our circle knew, P & B wouldn't be there due to a Family Emergency, yet still majorly hyper due to caffeine/lack of sleep/excitement at seeing FanFriends....
I'm told that my joyous cry of "PEEEEEETEEEEERRRRRR!!!!!" at unexpectedly seeing said friend on the other side of the Dealer's Room could be heard clear on the other side of the hotel....
*wishing I was at MediaWest right now*
What's my point, you ask? (other than being nostalgic and homesick for friends --the family you choose for yourself!-- that I haven't seen or talked to for waaaay too long) Well, here's where the free-floating association comes in.... while some members of the RBG fandom might be reminded of the Peter Venkman/Slimer dynamic, I always sort of connected it more to a certain coffee commercial in which a young man in uniform arrives at the family home early one cold holiday morning, obviously unexpected, to be greeted gleefully (tho' quietly) by a younger sister ('Peter'), and later (after brewing some of the advertisers' coffee -- this is, after all, a commercial) an older woman comes down the stairs to be pleasantly surprised and joyfully exclaims, "Peter!"
(Bear with me)
Which having recently seen "Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" reminds me of Peter and Lucy and how I always got the impression that Peter was Lucy's favorite brother because of the scene in the book where Lucy wakes up in the forest, hearing a voice in her dream that she thinks first is her father's, then maybe Peter's (it turns out to be Aslan, actually)... which takes me off on a side tangent re: The Five People You Meet in Heaven....
....and oddly enough turns into a plot ferret for the Torchwood/Yu-Gi-Oh! AU semi-based on my "Weight of a Feather" stories that Dragonwrangler was talking about last week....except it's not Peter and Lucy, or Peter/sister/mother, or even Peter and not-hathor.....
It's Jack'UncleJamie'Harkness and ???
(Sometimes, it gets VERY Strange inside my mind)
