Name Anise Tatlin
Fandom Tales of the Abyss
Age 13
Gender female
Appearance
Anise is short-a mere 4’11”, but she’s still growing-and somewhat small in frame. She has a mass of dark hair that’s usually just pulled into pigtails; if she left it down, you probably couldn’t see her face under it all. She’s one of those blessed people who tans easily and with little effort; just being outside for awhile will do it, usually with virtually no risk of sunburn.
Usually, she’s dressed in what she has decided is her uniform (it’s classy and makes her look rich!): nice shoes, long white socks that come up past her knees, skirt with a skort function underneath, off-shoulders sleeves, and a nice cape-y vest to go over the whole ensemble. Her held-together-with-love-and-a-prayer doll, Tokunaga, always rests on her back. Always. He’s held up by some sort of clasp.
Personality
If you asked Anise about her own personality, she would insist that she’s a delicate maiden who needs a (rich!) prince to come rescue her from her sad state of being. She would be dead wrong.
Anise is energetic, rambunctious, headstrong, short-tempered, and more than a bit greedy. She aspires to hit it big, either by luck or by marriage, and will not hesitate to put up a fight with anything that gets in her way. While she’s actually somewhat precocious and is very capable of higher-level thinking, she can appear to very childish. The fact that she carries a doll around with her and her habit of announcing displeasure with a loud “Booooo!” certainly don’t help matters.
When it comes to people she cares about, family or otherwise, Anise is intensely loyal. She’ll do just about anything to keep those close to her safe, which is part of the reason Gene Co assigned her to be a bodyguard in the first place. They assumed being a guardian would come naturally, given her protective nature.
Background
Anise Tatlin’s family is in a great deal of debt.
Oliver and Pamela Tatlin’s monetary woes come largely from altruism and gullibility, as opposed to materialism and narcissistic surgery. Unfortunately, they just never learned how to properly manage money, and their devout nature often caused them to not notice things like malicious intent. (Yes, religion persists in the city. Just because it’s not popular doesn’t mean people stopped believing entirely.)
It was in this environment, in the slums, that Anise grew up. Despite her parents’ frustrating ability to lose money before they ever saw it, they always found a way to provide for their daughter, and the three of them were very close.
Somehow, as Anise grew she acquired some sort of monetary sense. As she approached her teenage years, she started to realize a troubling pattern. The bills scattered around the coffee table amounted to more than the three of them were able to scrape together, and her father had just gotten a final notice from Gene Co about a replaced liver. Even at the age of twelve, Anise realized that meant her father had 90 days to live. She asked her parents about it, and they simply told her it was in God’s hands.
Anise wasn’t satisfied with that answer. She went to petition Gene Co directly, acting as a character witness on her father’s behalf and offering to do anything, anything to help work off her parents’ debt.
Amazingly, the petition worked. In exchange for letting her father live, Gene Co essentially took possession of the family itself. Oliver and Pamela were taken in as unpaid servants in the Largo estate. Anise herself was assigned to act as an official bodyguard to Gene Co executives (or, rather, their children-her young age makes her a good candidate, as it holds the element of surprise. She just appears to be a friend of babysitter). She makes a small stipend, most of which she forwards to her parents, but certainly not enough to make a difference in the long run.
Her solution to that predicament? Marry rich, of course!
Since then, she’s developed a sort-of-kind-of friendship with Dist, and a sort of professional camaraderie with Jade, since their different positions often overlap in responsibility when things go awry.
Genetics & alterations Nothing as of yet.
Tokunaga, the doll her mother made for her right before she took her assignment at Gene Co, has seen some alterations c/o of Dist. At Anise’s command, it grows several times her size so she can hop on its back and do some serious hurting.
Not that dolls have genetics or anything. But the point stands.
