APPEARANCE
"Has anybody seen Sam Lowry?"

Sam is thirty-eight years old. His dark hair is starting to thin and lines are starting to appear around his eyes, but there is still a certain boyishness to his features that will probably never go away completely. He is fairly tall at 6'2" and skinny, and usually walks with his shoulders hunched forward slightly. He is more often than not dressed in a suit and tie, because his job demands it.

PERSONALITY
KURTZMANN: That's what you wanted, isn't it?!
SAM: Oh, I don't know... I don't know what I want.

Sam is an escapist born into a world that offers him few outlets. By now he's been in the world long enough to strike a kind of deal with it: so long as he keeps himself buried and doesn't make any sudden moves, it'll leave him alone and let him go about his business. This arrangement only works if Sam stays exactly where he is and doesn't want anything too much, so it's a good thing he has absolutely no idea what he wants (or, at least, knows he can't find it in London).

On the outside, Sam appears to be a cautious, practical and unambitious. He has a quick mind, one that allows him to understand procedure and technology much easier than most people, and also makes it easy for him to coast at his job. Under the surface, though, he is a restless dreamer, longing for a life of bright colours and bold gestures, searching for something worthy of throwing all of his energy into and not knowing the first place to start looking.

SEXUALITY
JACK: Remember how they used to stick out?
SAM: What? Oh, yes, um... well, rather... Always used to wonder if they were real.
ALLISON: What, my ears?

Sam doesn't see anything wrong with the act of sex itself, just so long as it's done under the right circumstances. Though he does indulge in the odd casual fantasy, real, physical sex to Sam is about love -- or at the very least, commitment. He wouldn't normally even broach the topic until he was committed to a woman and certain she was keen on it as well. And yes, woman. Sam is fairly well straight, and while almost no one is entirely hetero- or homo-sexual, it would take some pretty intense or peculiar circumstances to have him considering another man.

IN ROWAN
The world above him was bright and blue, but Sam only saw the glare of it as it pierced his eyes, and he felt -- nothing. Something bubbled up inside of him; he thought it was the scream he had been waiting for, but it was laughter. A sharp, hysterical laughter that rose to a cackle, then melted, eventually, into weeping.

Sam left London on Christmas Day and emerged from the sands of Rowan on September 23rd. He was taken from almost the very end of his original canon: from the precise moment just before his mind snapped completely. Since then, Sam has been plodding the slow and painful road to recovery -- from his grief, his guilt, and the psychological trauma that was visited on him.

IN BETE NOIRE
He's rather used to feeling dispirited -- it comes from years of practice -- but there's been a new colour to the feeling recently. The direction of his life has been changed. Just when he'd gotten the sense that there could be some momentum building, he'd taken an unintentional U-turn.

There's the sense of something lost.

Sam left London on December 23rd and arrived in Bete Noire on November 8th. Though he only left his life two days earlier than he did for Rowan, this is a very different Sam -- one unburdened by guilt, but also still the restless dreamer, uncertain whether any of his fantasies will ever come to light.
