Turns out that I'm emotionally invested in DQB2 after all!
The situation in Dragon Quest Builders 2 has been upgraded to me telling every NPC on this island GET TO FUCK YOU SHITEY CUNTS.
Situation one: Malroth saying "Please don't do this" when everyone is being subjected to the Mirror That Shows You Who You Really Are is heartbreaking. No. Dislike. The fact that he comes up to you afterwards and tells you how betrayed he feels but there are monsters that need hitting so you'll have to talk about it later: ALSO BAD.
Situation two: SOME SCHMUCK comes up to you with Totes Legit orders from the king to build a secret dungeon under the castle in what used to be the secret castle treasure vault. Cool. Don't tell anyone you're building it? Don't let anyone help you? Okay, I'm going to be put in gaol once I've built this. Cool, standard, I am not surprised.
Situation three: Nope, they put Malroth in gaol instead.
Not me and Malroth. Not me. Just Malroth.

And the worst part is that he thinks that the player character helped with this! Or at least knew about it! And then refuses to look at her, which is even fucking worse because I headcanon her as using sign language, so him turning his back means that she can't even talk at him, let alone to him.
Situation four: The inhabitants of Moonbrooke are just like "Oh hey, I know that your friend is in prison, but would you mind building us a death laser? We'll let him out when it's done!" and I'm over here like "... Are you fucks seriously holding my sealed evil in a can best friend hostage until I build you a super weapon? Is that what's happening here?" soooooooooooo what I'm saying is that I don't care if Moonbrooke has a traitor problem! I want to be the traitor! Let Malroth out of gaol or I swear to fuck I'm going to break all of the walls and let the demons run riot over you! And any time I try to send the player character in to say, use her magic hammer to break down the cell walls, one of the nice side characters shows up like "Mate. MATE. You know we can't let you do that!"
Probably the issue is that all of my emotional investment for today has gone into this game, and also I want to write ridiculous melodrama fic for all of my teenage fandoms like the 00s never ended, but also give me back my best friend you assholes!
