When Renee resolved to help figure this thing out, committing crimes in the process hadn't crossed her mind.
Stupid her.
They had already four misdemeanors and at least on felony so far getting into the place.
"Will you hurry up?" She hissed, looking for any guards.
Charlie, mask in place, had the security panel next to the door pulled off. Wires were hanging out all over the place as he fiddled around with it. "Hey, if you can do this faster, then be my guest." If he was uncomfortable about breaking and entering on private property, he didn't show it.
"Ah, here we go," he said as a distinct clicking sound indicated the doors unlocking.
This really should bother her more. Breaking these laws.
Charlie's influence, probably.
She went in past the doors, careful and watching for anyone who might catch them.
"Cameras," Charlie said quietly, gesturing at the one overlooking the entryway.
"Got it," She replied, just as quiet. Pulling a can of spray paint from her belt, she sprayed the lens before it could get an image of them.
Really, this whole thing was almost fun. Poking her nose into places it didn't belong...
With the mask in place it was hard to tell that Charlie was grinning about the whole thing. He held a finger to his lips as they approached the door to what must have been a conference room of some sort. Voices filtered through.
"...second stage, as scheduled..."
"...arming them won't be a problem..."
"...expecting another shipment from Kahndaq within the month..."
Kahndaq... if Black Adam was part of this...
There was a snarl just beyond them.
...there was no way this wasn't going to suck.
It was a... wolf thing. Before there was time to notice anything else, it was on them. It hit like a large, furry brick, sending them through the door. Charlie went flying but was fortunate enough to have his fall broken by a desk. Whatever it was landed on top of Renee, pinning her under its weight.
It stood on it's hind legs, the stench almost making Renee gag. And it was all over then, she just knew it. Couldn't get to her gun...
"That's enough." A woman's voice. "Let's have a look at them, shall we?"
And suddenly they weren't being pinned by a giant... wolf thing. Instead it was a ridiculously muscled man covered with scars who seemed to have forgotten his clothes somewhere. The woman's voice was sibilant, and she looked... slightly off.
"Ah, our faceless friend. What a surprise." She didn't sound surprised.
"Oh," she turned to Renee. "But you're new." Her eyes flared wide and she hissed, "What's your name, little morsel?"
"Renee Montoya."
She answered before she could stop herself. The tongue on her face... ugh. Disgusting.
"Nice to have met you, however briefly. Mister Abbot?" He said, dropping her hold on them and walking away, yellow serpintine skin flexing beneath the insanely expensive dress she wore.
The wolf--now a man-- held them, turning toward her. "Whisper?"
"They'll have to die, I'm afraid."
"Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait," Charlie interrupted before anyone could do anything... irreversible. "C'mon! Don't you want to know why we're here? What we heard?"
She continued to walk away, ignoring him.
"Gentlemen, indulge yourself."
Two more men appear silently. The sound of wood snapping filled Renee's ears as they began to transform again. This was very very bad.
"You know that gun from last time?" Charlie asked Renee as he stood up. "Now'd probably be a good time to use it."
He exploded suddenly, his foot whipping around into one of the were-creatures' jaw. Considering how well they did against the last one of these, this may not have been the best plan.
Renee reached for the gun in the back of her pants-- suddenly the lights when out. It gave her time to get cover so she could get a decent shot off before she noticed what knocked out the lights.
She knew he didn't abandon this place. All those rumors were true...
Well, someone hadn't abandoned the city, at least. Even if it wasn't a 'he'. The redhaired woman who came through the window to plant a heel in the eye of one of the were-things was wearing a suit that didn't leave much to the imagination. She was fast and fluid, dodging blows that would have broken bones and then countering with punches and kicks and elbow strikes nearly as strong.
Well damn. That's sure as hell not a Batgirl.
Renee used her distraction to bring up the gun, aiming at of the men-- creatures before he could get to her.
The Batwoman saw the gun and leaped at Renee. "No!" she yelled as her hand snapped out to shove the gun (and Renee) out of line. Then, without missing a beat, she shifted and grabbed the charging thing Renee had been about to shoot... and threw him out the window.
Like Batman, she didn't let Renee take the shot.
But something-- someone taught her to throw a punch like that...
Well, damn. This complicated things, didn't it?
A tiny shift in posture was the only recognition the redhead gave Renee. As Charlie got back up and made his way over to the pair the Batwoman turned toward the window. "Police are en route. I'd appreciate it if you'd leave me out of this."
And with that she leaped out the window, firing some sort of grappling hook, and swung into the night.
Charlie watched her leave, face unreadable as ever underneath the mask. The smirk, however, was clear as crystal in his voice.
"I think she likes you."
...
"Shut. Up."
