The full moon started tomorrow, and Jack was already starting to feel like he was itching inside his skin. Not that it was so bad; it just meant he'd have a little extra energy to burn off if Emma followed through on her threats to visit, and that it was probably not the day when he should decide to start participating in online political forums if he didn't want to destroy his laptop.

He paused just inside the doorway, scenting the visitor. (Though, even without werewolf senses, the bed in the living room would have been a pretty good clue.)

"Someone's here," he called. "Hello."

"Hey, Jack," Kaidan called back. "My old colleague Joker is crashing here for the weekend."

That would do for an introduction, right?

"For certain definitions of 'crashing,' hopefully ones that do not involve more broken bones," Joker said. "Yo."

"Hey," Jack said, leaning over to offer his hand to shake. "We try to get our guests off the island in one piece -- at least, if they came that way to start with. Nice to meet you."

For a thin man, Joker had an iron grip, and he shook Jack's hand solidly. "Same. So you're one of the ones who pulled Kaidan off the street?"

"I rented a room on my way in, Joker, just like anybody else," Kaidan said, throwing him a dry look.

He was used to it by now.

Jack feigned a sorrowful look in Kaidan's direction. "So I can't make up a tragic tale of having carried you in half-dead from pneumonia and nursed you back to health?" he asked. "Damn."

"Anyhow," he said. "yes, I live here. Ronan's the other one, I'm sure he'll be around eventually. And Emma lived here for the summer, and she's supposed to visit this weekend."

He directed the last statement to Kaidan as much as to Joker.

"Ah," Kaidan said.

It wasn't that he minded Emma himself, but. Well. Joker might.

"Emma's a, uh." Beat. "She's a telepath."

He'd warn Joker about the rest of her, but he wasn't so sure Joker wasn't perfectly equipped to deal with that.

Jack stole this ping because Ahddie took off for a while, so ha raised his eyebrows and turned to Kaidan.

"She's not going to complain if I get her a hotel room, you know," he said, with some certainty. "Shall I set that up?"

"Wait, is this, like, fuck with the new guy, or are you serious?" Joker asked, looking between them. "Because I'm preeeeeeeetty sure they're always telling us that biotics don't work that way."

"They don't."

Kaidan just had to establish that. "But Emma's powers do. There's a reason the Alliance keeps chunks of this place classified."

"Her skills are a genetic mutation," Jack piped up, and looked over at Kaidan again. "Is the multiverse classified, or just the fact there are human psychics in it?"

"Neither," Kaidan replied, glancing towards him. "But a lot of the weird stuff that goes on around here..."

Joker held up his hands. "Okay, stop," he said. "Look, if I don't know about it, they can't find a way to make me tell them about it."

"So I will be perfectly charming and nice and just not spend a lot of time around her?"

"It won't be hard to keep her busy," Jack offered, relieved no one was demanding he come up with money for a hotel. "There are other people she'll want to see, and it's ... an odd time of the month."

"I can encourage her not to be too curious about either of you."

"I don't mind Emma," Kaidan said honestly. (And out of everyone he knew, he secretly kind of thought the only person who'd be able to go wit to wit with her was Joker) "Just thought I'd give Joker the rundown."
