Author's notes: This is the fic I was working on in January. It explores Dom and Jarrod's history at Pai Zhua. After reading it again I decided that it contains premises that many readers might not like or agree with so I have decided to post it on my LiveJournal page rather than in a community.
Dominic walked the garden path with Master Mao. “Dominic, I'm afraid I have bad news for you,” the Master said. “You will not be chosen to be a protector.”
Dominic sighed. “Is that all you have to tell me?” he asked.
“I wanted to talk to you privately,” Master Mao explained. “I spoke with Jarrod earlier. I know what's going on between the two of you.”
Dominic stopped.
“He told you everything?”
“He told me all I need to know.”
Dominic sighed. “Neither of us meant for things to happen the way they did. It just, happened. Did you expel him?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I believe you took advantage of Jarrod's insecurity and need for acceptance.”
“He's not a child, Master Mao. We're very close. He opens up to me. If you take me out of his life completely, I'm afraid that he will isolate himself again. I'll accept any punishment you think I deserve. But please don't expel me from the academy!”
“I am giving you a choice,” Master Mao replied. “You may re-enter Pai Zhua at the beginning level, or you must go on a journey and find your purpose.”
They continued their walk. “Where would I go on this journey?” Dominic asked.
“Wherever your heart takes you,” Master Mao answered cryptically.
“My heart is here,” Dominic said.
“You have great potential,” Master Mao explained, “but you have no focus. Only when you have found a purpose to your life are you truly ready to posses the power.”
Dominic thought for a moment. “How long will my journey take?” he asked.
“It could take a week, a year, or even a lifetime,” Master Mao answered.
“A lifetime?”
“Some of us reach our destiny in this lifetime, but others reach theirs in the spirit realm.”
Master Mao and Dominic stopped the end of the garden path.
“You are to move out of Jarrod's room immediately and into the guest room. Meet me at the entrance of the great hall tomorrow morning at sunrise with your decision.”
Dominic entered his quarters to find Jarrod sitting on the floor in the lotus position with his eyes closed meditating. He turned and was about to sneak out.
“Wait!” Jarrod called out.
He turned to face Jarrod, who stood up.
“What did he say to you?” Jarrod asked.
“He says that I must either go back to cub status or go on some journey.”
“Journey? Master Mao didn't tell me I could go on a journey!”
“So you're a cub again next year?”
“Yeah,” Jarrod sighed. “So tell me about this field trip?”
“I have to go on a journey to find my purpose.”
“Your purpose?” Jarrod asked incredulously.
“I can't stay,” Dominic sighed. “I was going to finish next year. RJ said he thought I would be chosen to be a protector. But now...”
“You can start over,” Jarrod urged. “We'll get there together.” Jarrod reached out and held Dominic's hand in his.
Dominic smiled for a moment.
“Just think, you and me, protectors.”
Dominic's smile faded. “I can't start over. Not after all these years!”
Jarrod released his gentle hold on Dominic's hand. “It's never too late to start over.”
“Do you know how old I'll be then?”
“That doesn't matter. Look at RJ. His own father held him back. But he didn't give up. And soon, he'll be a master.”
Dominic sat down on the edge of the lower bunk. “I can't go through all that again. Besides, Master Mao didn't say how long my journey had to take. I could just go away for a month or two and come back.”
“It's never that simple with Master Mao.” Jarrod sat on the bed next to Dominic and leaned his head on Dominic's shoulder. “Why does he have to do this to us?”
“You know the rules, Jarrod.”
“Well, the rules are stupid.”
“I know,” Dominic said as he shrugged his shoulder out from under Jarrod's head and stood up from the bed. “I'm not supposed to be talking to you. I'm supposed to be packing my belongings and moving out.” Dominic turned to face Jarrod. “I want you to promise me something. I want you to stay and finish. No matter how long it takes.”
“Okay,” he said, “but I want you to promise me something. I want you to come back. No matter how long it takes. I'll be here waiting for you.”
“Well, I hope I won't be gone too long,” Dominic said. “But don't stick around here waiting for me if I am.”
“I hope you come back soon,” Jarrod said. “I'm going to catch up and finish with my class.”
“If anyone can, you can,” Dominic said with a grin.
