Room 222, Friday Evening

Apr 15, 2011 18:50

Prom was tonight. And that was a big deal! It really was! Only, somewhere over the course of the day, after a lot of showering and a bit of flopping about on his bed trying futilely to sleep, Warren had managed to reason to himself that he was going to have another prom before his own graduation. And he felt like hell and kind of looked like it, ( Read more... )

Karla...Karla had a dilemma. On the one hand, this was Warren's prom. His first prom. And all of her friends from this world had made it VERY CLEAR that prom was an important thing! And maybe Warren would want to go to a dance where things wouldn't try to kill him, where he could just have fun and drink spiked punch and just forget about last night.

Well, this morning, really.

The problem? Karla was really weighing the options between putting on another fancy dress and going to a ball and just locking herself in her room forever and not coming out. Right now, the locking herself up idea was winning.

After coming back down from celebrating Emma getting into ESU, Karla took one look at the prom gown hanging up in her closet, along with the strappy shoes she'd have to shove her feet into and all the cosmetics she'd have to smear on and sighed. Mother Night, this was going to take forever. Especially with as little enthusiasm as she had for the task ( ... )

It took Warren a few moments to wrap his head around the fact that those were actual words going on, outside his actual door, there in the real world, which was so very much more pleasant than the birds-eye view of the horror landscapes that were playing and re-playing themselves over and over in his mind's eye.

"Ready...?"

... Oh. Oh, right. There was that... that thingie... that was...

"Mind coming in for a moment, Karla? I'm about as decent as I ever get..."

Which mostly meant that he was wearing pants, and exercising that other other superpower of his, that Bobby had mentioned. Because he didn't have to pull a shirt on for anybody in the safety of his own room, anyhow.

Well, that sounded interesting.

Karla opened the door and stepped inside, stopping when she saw Warren lying prone on the bed. He most definitely didn't look like he was getting ready for prom anytime soon.

Dammit. She wasn't sure if she was supposed to be worried or elated. Right now, elated was kind of winning.

"Is there a reason you're not getting dressed?" she asked. She was trying not to sound hopeful, and ended up sounding kind of flat.

"... Kind of," Warren replied, sounding vaguely apologetic as he rolled over and sat up. "Sorry, I can. I mean, it isn't that I don't have a suit or anything. I just didn't really... I wasn't entirely..."

My, this was working well.

He shrugged.

"I'm sorry, Karla. My head wasn't really in it. I was going to call you to tell you..."

Wait. He didn't want to go to the Prom? He didn't want to get up, wrestle into fancy clothes and spend all night making small talk?

If she hadn't been in love with him already, she might have fallen for him right then.

"Not going?" Karla was turning a brilliant smile onto him now. "Oh, thank the Darkness! The idea of having to wear more shoes--ugh! Best boyfriend ever!"

Needless to say, that was not the reaction that Warren had been anticipating while he was working his way up to a half-decent grovel.

"Huh?" And now he was blinking at you, Karla. "You didn't want to go?"

"Ugh," Karla repeated, frowning. "I mean, I like dances? And I was really excited to go when you asked me?" In no small part just because he'd asked her. "But after everything this past week...the last thing I want to do was get dressed up and go to yet another party." She gave Warren a rueful smile. "I haven't even brushed my hair yet today," she admitted. "But I didn't want to make you miss your junior prom if you wanted to go."

Oh, Karla. You were totally Warren's favorite until the end of time itself.

"After all of that? I think I can live without my junior prom. I mean... I'll have another one in my senior year, right? Maybe with less vampire stuff right before it, even."

Yeah, the fewer vampires, the better.

"You'll also have to come back for my senior year," Karla agreed with a nod. She shuffled over to his bed and smiled. "That's two and that's plenty for anyone. Mind if I join you, since I don't have to go back to my room and strap myself into seven layers of tiny little undergarments?"

Seriously. She was almost giddy with relief now. There was nothing like getting a reprieve from that thing you were dreading.

"And no vampires. We won't visit Sookie for a solid month before prom. It'll be a rule."

"I like that rule," Warren decided, scooting over and giving the spot on the bed beside himself a little pat in invitation. "I'm going to hold us both to that one."

They'd see how well that one worked, eventually.

They did really well with rules! The Pants' Rule was still intact and the No Eviscerations Rule had only been broken once and that was before it had become official!

Karla hopped up onto his bed and snuggled right into the spot he'd made for her. Oooh, it was still warm. "If she comes looking for us, we'll hide," she decided, steadfastly ignoring the fact that next year, Sookie would be gone.

Just like Emma. Just like Jono. Just like Triela.

Nope. Totally not thinking about it.

"You'll fly us away to Hawaii and Captain Chiba's boat. That's a good plan, right?"

"That's the best plan," Warren agreed, stretching a wing out to drape over her shoulder. "I think the good Captain would totally agree, too."

And feed them both. A lot. And do a fair bit of winking at them, too. And laughing.

Warren was pretty fond of Captain Chiba and his crew.

There would probably be a fair bit of nudging involved as well. Captain Chiba was awesome that way.

"His cook is so amazing," Karla groaned, reaching up to run her hands over the underside of Warren's wing. "I would try to hire him away if I didn't think it would make Captain Chiba sad."

Though if she could get both the cook and a herd of kobe cows or whatever they were called...

If she could manage that, then ultimate divinity would be within arm's reach.

It would be unbelievable.

Much like the way her hands felt, running over his feathers that way.

"All the more reason for us to hide out in Hawaii more often," Warren decided. "We can make Captain Chiba happy and eat whatever the cook sees fit to prepare, that way."

Win-win!

"You know, summer is coming up," Karla pointed out with no ulterior motives at all. "And I bet Captain Chiba misses us."

Also Warren's pocket book. But hopefully them, too.

"It would be a shame to deprive him of our company for too long."

"I haven't heard about any sort of trip for break week," Warren noted, grinning faintly. "If you were hoping to really get a lot of quality time in with the good Captain at all..."

The plan was brilliant in its simplicity, right?
