New York City, Wednesday Evening Fandom Time

Aug 06, 2014 21:52

Warren frowned as he made his way into the condo that he used to call home. It was exactly how he remembered it- a little too clean, a little too unlived in. Even his room hadn't changed since the last time he'd been here with Karla. There were only a few things missing, which Karla had vanished and taken with her before they'd gone tearing off to ( Read more... )

Warren had been gone for almost two weeks before she'd heard from him again--though, to him, it had probably been just a few hours.

Hell's fire and Mother Night, she missed him. And she still had another fortnight or so to go before he'd be back. Thank the Darkness he only had to sign a few papers. Maybe he could be home within ten days, if he signed the papers right after breakfast.

Her phone beeped. Ooh! A text! From Warren!

...About a wall.

Oookay. Well, she'd remembered hearing about the illegal immigrant debate from high school. Apparently Warren's world had kicked that into overdrive? It probably involved Mexican mutants.

Everything that seemed morally wrong seemed to center around mutants in Warren's world.

Ugh. Your dad give you details about the papers yet?

Warren, meanwhile, got Karla's text practically within seconds of sending his own. He smiled faintly at that, though it was a wry one. He wouldn't have to wait for her replies, really. She, on the other hand, would probably be sitting around for a good twenty minutes in the time it took for him to tap out a reply.

And only because he wasn't currently distracted.

Some. I'll be staying here in the building and the paperwork will come to me. We'll be signing down in the meeting room - you remember the one - as early tomorrow morning as possible. Dad needs to call a meeting after that, of W.Labs execs. Should take a few hours from there. Red tape, all of it.

Mmm. Damn right I remember. Do you think he replaced the table? Karla asked with a naughty grin. Has he said anything to you about it?

That poor table.

He looked like he'd swallowed something weird when we walked by it earlier, didn't mention anything though. I'll let you know the state of the table tomorrow. It'll help pass the time around the legal proceedings MUCH faster.

Well, for him, anyway. Maybe for her too, if she kept re-reading texts?

If for some reason he wants to give it up, I'm sure we could find a place for it.

Karla was such a giver. So much so that she sent him a snapchat--after calling in the fake glasses she'd bought for that meeting and putting them on.

... That was the best text yet.

The one with the picture. Though he could see the appeal in bringing the table home.

I'm not carrying it through all of Portalocity's stopovers. You'll have to come help me get it. We'll have to check its structural integrity before we move it, of course.

And immediately after, just to make sure that it got through with no damage.

On the off-chance that being vanished for the duration of the trip might have damaged it in some way.

Because that could happen. Those trips get rough. We might have to stop a few times along the way to check it, too.

...

Not in London. Ever again.

There was no love for the zombie Blitz. None.

Wow, way to bring that bad memory back up, Warren! Dammit!

Mood killer.

I'm impressed you were maintaining the mood through all that time between these texts, honestly. That shows commitment. You'll get it back in no time, at that rate.

Karla, you were marrying a brat. Were you aware?

Yes, actually. EXTREMELY AWARE.

Well, it helps that I've been keeping company with an old friend, you know? Remember him? Maybe I should send you a picture of us together.

It helped, so was she.

If it's the friend I'm thinking of, I certainly wouldn't mind a few pictures. Do you want me to pick up batteries before coming home tomorrow?

For their friend?

Hmmm. Maybe I SHOULDN'T send you a pic. Wouldn't want to distract you from whatever you're doing.

That and by the time she got the text, said friend was already cleaned up and put away. It was breakfast time, with Cora and Nyles devouring pancakes almost as fast as she was.

But when are more batteries bad ideas? Especially with how long you'll be gone.

Tease. You didn't even take pictures while you had him out?

Yeah, Warren was keenly aware of how much time had likely passed.

I'll bring more batteries anyhow. Along with my peace offering for being gone so long.

Maybe if you hadn't murdered the mood, I would have. Karla sent, helping Nyles struggle through his assigned reading. That's what you get. Though maybe I'll reconsider if you tell me what my present is.

Warren couldn't help but chuckle at that.

You mean besides the meeting room table?

Yes, Warren. Aside from that.
