Rebel 33 [Voice]

Mar 24, 2011 13:41

[The past few days have been a little overwhelming. Between Hinamizawa Syndrome and Nu getting smashed and several hours of overtime at the clinic, Litchi is hitting the point where she's getting burned out. Rather than keep pushing herself, she's actually taking a day off. It's a rainy day, after all; what better time for a break ( Read more... )

rainy days, @bernkastel, @mizuno ami, @alexis rodgers, reading is fundamental!, @robert hastings, @david jordan (yellow 13), needs a vacation

Ah... well, Terran medical equipment would likely have been able to mend the damage in a few minutes... [He's not bragging, just stating a fact that he hadn't really considered.] Luceti's technology is not quite as efficient, is it? ...

... Is the medical ability of the... magical spirits [- geez, that is still weird to say -] sufficient for this sort of thing? Perhaps I ought to consider attempting to learn it. [If he can even do so at all.]

And... I suppose that means you can fight too, then... [Robert's voice has traces of sadness in it. He is quickly beginning to realize that other worlds are mostly fighting worlds, and that many of his friends - and his own partner - are also capable of fighting. As much as the majority of his mind still reviles the prospect, he is also - more slowly - beginning to realize that those two sections - the fighting section and the kind, gentle section - are capable of existing in tandem.

All he sees when he's met Litchi were those kind, gentle, intelligent parts of her... And those parts, he hopes, outweigh whatever fighting parts she has.]

Do you know Nu well yourself, then? I had... only spoken to her once before, which is how I know her name. I nearly did not recognize her with all of that armour on... But it is quite lucky she had it, otherwise her assailant might have done much more grevious damage to her. [He shakes his head, looking sick.] The attacker should be brought to whatever justice exists in Luceti. There is no excuse for attacking somebody like that.

Luceti isn't very technologically-advanced, I'm afraid. It was quite a big deal last year when electricity was brought in. But yes, the Filial Spirit's healing magic isn't anything to sneeze at. It does take some practice to learn, though.

[She just gives a soft 'hmm' in answer to the fighting ability.] It's... nothing something I'm proud of, I have to admit. I prefer not to fight if I can.

[Uncertain pause. It takes her a moment to find the right words.]

...I wouldn't say I know Nu well. But I do know her to some extent. She's from the same world I am.

I thought as much... That would certainly explain the mindset of the villagers, I suppose. [It's so strange, for Robert. So awkwardly out of place, to know that technology should be capable of so much more, and isn't.]

... I am glad to hear this, Doctor Faye-Ling. [He is. It confirms what he hoped - that Litchi was... somewhat like Donatello, in that regard. That she could fight but... didn't like to do it.]

Ah, is that so? Is she a common... subspecies there? ... I honestly cannot tell if she is a human sapient or a non-human sapient...

... Are there many others from your world, here?

[Litchi is silent for a pretty good stretch as she mulls over how to break this to him. May as well just tell the truth.]

...No. She's not something common at all. To my knowledge, there have only ever been 13 of them, and she's the thirteenth. [And the twelfth is also here in Luceti, but Litchi keeps trying to push that out of her mind. Noel is Noel, and that's it.] ...She's a living weapon, to put it simply.

[Her voice falters a bit here.] There used to be more of us around Luceti, but yes, there's still a fairly good number. I live with two - a lieutenant in our world's military, Tsubaki, and a... cat girl named Taokaka. [Easiest way to explain it.] Noel was another lieutenant. Our world's most wanted bounty is here as well, although... he honestly doesn't cause much trouble. There used to be five more, including the professor I worked for some years ago, but they've all been sent home.

A... living weapon? Like... a bioengineered unit? [This strikes very close to home. The genetic black markets of Terra had more than a few requests for... unorthodox organisms like that.

It makes him a little sick to think about.]

I see... so your world has other genetically engineered organisms as well? [This is what he understands from "cat girl".] But at least you are not alone, Doctor Faye-Ling. [Unlike myself. Robert realizes that many people here will never understand what Terra is like unless they were to go there.

And that's depressing.]

Yes. [It's not something that Litchi likes to think about either, but it's the truth. And just one more reason why she's really coming to prefer Luceti.]

We had quite a few genetically-engineered creatures, yes. The entire Kaka clan is an example. I studied them on the side when I lived in Orient Town.

It is nice to have some others from a similar background here, but... I've found that all of us in Luceti have similar enough worlds that we can all still relate to one another and understand each other. For all our differences, when you get right down to it, all of our worlds are very much alike.

Would you be interested, or able, to tell me more about the Kaka clan? [Robert's curious, even if the idea of bioengineering sapients for the sake of war disturbs him. Usually, whenever operations like that were seized by the Terran Council, the species would be reintroduced into a suitable environment after psychological testing... It was rare that weapons were completely impossible to rehabilitate.

But...]

I suppose so... but, Doctor Faye-Ling, I have found that many people cannot understand Terra. The idea of a war-free, pacifistic world is one that seems to be almost unfathomable to many...
