I read it like I read all my favorite books - skipping around. So I guess I've read it about 1.5 times by now, and there's no hope of these responses being in order.
( Here be spoilers )
Gosh, the epilogue so much did not happen, except as a "Look! No sequels!" gesture. The shipping there doesn't matter to me one way or another; it just feels like a reductive reining-in.
Re: chess, Ron did get in that one line about rooks....
I wonder if we can convince JKR to take it out of later editions. Like she rewrote the priori incantatem flint in GoF.
I have yet to meet anyone who liked the epilogue. Even if those are your ships and that's what you wanted to see, you can easily imagine it yourself without it being canon.
I thinking that Snape must have found out when Harry was going to be moved and was wibbling to Dumbledore's portrait about whether he should tell Voldemort the truth. Because it seems like Snape possibly might have heard it from one of the Order members, since he is then able to get his hands on Mundungus and memory-charm him. Hell, he might even have heard it from Mundungus in the first place.
And I, like you, hated that epilogue and will pretend with the best of them that it didn't happen. :))
Possibly - but since all of the order knew that Snape had killed Dumbledore (Harry would've told them, right?), shouldn't they be suspicious of any contact with him. Yeah, I guess he did catch up with Dung, but can you use a Confundus charm to actually get information? I'd think he'd need something like veritaserum to get anyone in the order to talk to him.
Who knows? But if there is a Dark Arts spell equivalent to Veritaserum you can be sure Snape of all people would know it. It's just that I, like you, have a hard time thinking that Dumbledore's portrait could still know all and therefore am looking for some other way to explain it. :))

I think the last time I attempted a fanfic was after OotP came out, in like 2003. Wow.
