like the crappy song used for this subject, this will be an entirely cheesy, sappy post. you don't have to read all of it, but, please, if you know randi sherman from affirmations, read the section w/ her name bolded, there's important info for all of you to know.
they all amaze me, every single one of them. my little sisters and brother, but, they're not little anymore. they never really were little, tho, they were always so mature, so capable of whatever they put their minds to. and now, they impress me on a regular basis. they are all such beautiful people, SO incredibly strong, such kind, generous, socially minded people, always advocating for one cause or another. they have their weaknesses, mostly materialized in the female form, and i worry about some of them sometimes, but they learn from their mistakes---and mine.
a lot of them are social workers [hehe], or going into the social services fields, all of them are activists for more causes then i can possibly count.
i met them all through affirmations, and, at the time, they ranged in age from 11-15. they were my little sisters and brother, and i did what i could to be a good sister, giving them advice on coming out, girlfriends, and explanations on any sex act they could think to ask me about. i was there for them, and they were there for me... and now, here they are, so many years later...
ali was the baby.. 11 years old and SO amazingly mature she blew us all out of the water. the older kids would fight over who got to sit next to her at dennys. she is one that all of us, no matter how well we knew her, said was going places... was undoubtedly going to BE something. you knew the instant you met her that one day, everyone would know her name. now, she's an adult.. graduating EARLY from high school, going to college [tho her major is unsure right now], and engaged to a really nice boi who will treat her with respect and love. she works TWO jobs, one with mentally ill clients-she just started that one.
jess is the next youngest, i didn't meet her until she was about 14 or 15.. now she's a college freshman. last weekend, i attended a benefit concert for first step, a domestic violence organization that she has been volunteering at since her senior year of high school. she was playing, so i had to go.. it wasn't until after i got there that i realized she had put the ENTIRE thing on, all by herself. i almost cried after she was done playing guitar, and i remembered the first time she ever played for us, sitting on the couch at affirmations.
jaeden, well, sometimes i think he's the one i'm most impressed with. he's the one i call when i need advice, or to talk. when he was a little 15 year old girl, you could look at him, and see the strength in his face. he is so compassionate, so caring, so incredible in all the things he does. we were all so happy when he came out as trans, at least, i know i was.. he started smiling more, he was happy, he was finally more comfortable with who he was as a person. last weekend, he was in florida, speaking at a conference on trans issues. he has overcome SO much in his life... anyone who knows him knows how amazing all his accomplishments are... i feel like if i tried to list them off, i would fail miserably and miss out on so many important things that i won't even attempt it.
randi, well, she's the oldest. her and jaeden used to be a couple, and that's how i really got to know the two of them.. she moved off to school, up north, and we kind of lost touch, but then, about a year ago, i got a phone call from her, and now we have re-kindled our friendship, i'm amazed she has time to talk, what with running the local high schools GSA, being president of her college's GSA, teaching yoga, volunteering, two full time jobs, and a partner...now, she's about to be given an award from the
Triangle foundation, the Henry D Messer Youth Activist Award. it is probably the highest honor someone could be given for lgbtq activism in the entire state of michigan.
it's may 2nd, she'll be in town until about the 5th, and, to honor her amazing accomplishment, i would really like it if we could get the old skool affirmations crew together, and take her out for a fabulous vegan dinner.
contact me, let me know what day during that time will be good for you, it's sunday-wed, so i know it may not be the best time in your schedules, but, make time, it's randi afterall!
