[1. Barton is standing out on the curb near the mail box. She's wary when she gets a package with her name on it - there's a lot of things she doesn't want back. But there's a small box with something obviously tangible in it, and the things she's trying to avoid are most definitely intangible. Risking it, she opens it up to find her trust old ( Read more... )

Watching her work a moment he smiles.]]

It isn't but it's beyond some people in town. It's not that they are dumb, it's just that they have really weird concepts on how things work.

[[He'll come over. He hasn't had any projects lately.]]

Just let me know what part you want me to start on.

Didn't think anyone else in town'd be interested in stuff like this. But if someone in town can't figure out how a damn doghouse works, I feel sorry for 'em. Pretty easy thing to build.

Those planks over there need to be cut, if you think you can do that. I already have 'em marked, just cut along the line.

[There's a sawhorse with the planks and saw on it. No power tools, we do things the old fashioned way with Barton.]

[[Easy enough, saves him the extra time. He has gotten used to the "old fashion way" around here. Going to work on them.]]

Imagine if you spent your entire life in a world where you didn't have to nail, saw or construct something like this from scratch. I'm sure the common sense stuff to us would be hard.

I keep trying to think that way. How things must work in their worlds and how to deal with things here.

I guess. I can see someone maybe never doing it before, but not bein' completely unfamiliar to it. I mean, stuff's gotta get built somehow.

Maybe, maybe it just builds itself.

You see Lucas's walking table?

Lucas... [Oh right, she met him.] Wait, a walking table? How does that work?

I don't know, the legs just bends funny like real legs do.

See what I mean though? Lucas seems to see it as normal.

Huh. I guess. Guess it's good I at least know how things work around here.

Well. Kinda. Still learnin' a lot of this stuff.

Yeah, also the town doesn't always make sense.

I like doing these things because at least they seem normal.

'S all I know how to do, really. Of course, the town won't let me do it for a living so I gotta do it on my own.

Yeah, I used to work on cars back home and they have me stuck at the bowling alley because I'm not technically 18.

I know they won't let me do it cuz I'm a girl, but have ya tried switchin' jobs?

Reply

pants_yourmove July 26 2011, 17:13:49 UTC
Yeah, but it's a job "for adults".

I'd like to just quit and do some stuff on my own time but I guess the money is useful too.

I'm an adult, but ya can't tell them that. Won't listen, of course.

They gave me a job, kinda. It's volunteer so I don't get paid. Talk about BS.
