Robbie is cutting at least two teeth.
We discovered the first one Sunday night after he got home. He wouldn't let us look in his mouth then, so I don't know if it had broken through quite yet, but I felt a prominent bump on the gum line on the lower left side. Today, he let me look in his mouth and there is a gap between the two front teeth and where this on is coming in. But, instead of one white little point, there are two. I'm not sure if he is cutting a molar or two regular teeth. I'll have to wait until it/they come in a little bit more to know for sure.
If I remember correctly, aren't the molars the worst one to cut pain wise since there are so many points that have to break through?
Also, while looking in his mouth today, the gum line on his lower right side is swollen and starting to look slightly purple, similar to how the gums where his eyeteeth came in did before they broke through. No sign of a tooth yet though. Mom started worrying that maybe his doctor should look at him, but I reminded her it's normal since the tooth is basically ripping its way through his flesh and severing the blood vessels.
It looked like there may be a white dot on the gum for his upper left canine, but Robbie was tired of the Mama's Exploring Robbie's Mouth game and wouldn't have any more of it.
I had a feeling he was about to start cutting more teeth a couple of weeks ago. He started drooling buckets (soaking bibs, his outfits, whatever he was chewing on), chewing on things a lot more, tugging at his ears, he got a stuff nose for a few days leading up to the tooth coming in (which his doctor figured was just due to the rain since a lot of kids have coming in for that), random diaper rashes would spring up here and there, and he was just getting crankier and crankier as the days passed. You know, all of your
classic signs of
teething. He really started to get cranky leading up to this weekend and it hasn't improved any this week so far. It's gotten a lot worst since Thursday.
Poor little guy. I feel so sorry for him. His cheeks are even swelling along his jaw line, and he is so miserable. Last week, Motrin seemed to help him a lot, but now it seems to only be taking the edge off. It makes him feel a bit better to where he will actually want to play for a while, but after a bit, he wants back up in mama or his grandparents laps to cuddle.
He woke up not too long ago after about an hour of sleep screaming and crying hysterically. He was chewing on the bed when I went in to get him. When he fell asleep, it hadn't been time for him to have Motrin yet, so I doubted he was going to sleep for very long. It was time after he woke up, so he got some Motrin and laid in my arms, crying until it started to kick in. He fell asleep after twenty minutes or so.
That has got to be one of the hardest, most heartbreaking things as a parent, seeing your child scream and cry because they are in pain and all you can do is hold them and comfort them until the pain killers kick in.
