Those are the rules you should live by
And apply to all situations
There's one I'd add to the end now
Learn to let go.
We are great at creating dreams of how amazing life would be if we only had this or that.
The reality is that there's always something else to want once you get the current dream.
Be realistic, and if you feel like one thing is causing all your hardship, or one thing would cure all your wounds... let it go.
Because it's not doing either thing.
And you've lost objectivity.
Come back to it later when you can see it for what it is, not what you want it to be.
And don't try to short change this. Dont' go away for a week then think, "Alright, I'm ready." and go back.
Let go and don't ever plan on coming back.

girl: so why does this hurt so much?

Aaron: If you come back, you come back.
But let life lead you back on its own.
Happiness can be found a lot of places, from a lot of things.
Don't put all your happiness in one place. If one thing isn't doing you well, move on.
It hurts because, like 99% of the rest of our society, you've learned that you must pursue a relationship to be happy and define yourself as successful.
It's an easy answer, but the reality is, it's not an answer at all.
Once you obtain what you're longing for so badly, it will let you down.
I don't mean everything in life will let you down.
I mean that nothing in life is actually that important.
It's a romantic idea to think things are.
But what's important is life.
Live it for life, not for any individual piece.
And it will treat you well.

girl: you're too smart my dear

Aaron: Here's the thing about it. These ideas are easy, and obvious, but too frightening to face.
The fact is that life is not predictable, stable, or safe.
Things will change. Inevitably.
But we want our safety, and we want our rut.
So we try to pretend the world is that way.
And as things change, we cling to what we've already got, because it's making us happy now.
But it won't make us happy forever.
The search for happiness is never ending.
So don't be lazy, and don't be afraid. Life will take care of you. You don't see your next happiness now, but you'll see it when you get there, and it'll be fresh, and new, and beautiful.
And better than clinging to old dreams that have died long before you let them go.
