Spring babies!!!
There’s something hugely humbling about growing something from a seed. It’s got a lot of magic in it. You put something IN DIRT and give it some water, and BAM! Up comes an alive thing that at some point you can actually eat.
I did an informal poll on Instagram regarding what I thought might actually be my first sprouts - spinach. I have no idea what sprouting spinach looks like, so I called on master gardener Dawn
biggmellon, but she left it to Penny,
penichops who was also dubious. BUT! An internet search shows that my microscopic plants ARE baby spinach!!! (and that fact that they’re growing in neat little rows probably contributes to my joy)
Also yesterday they were joined by Kale babies and lettuce!
I was trying to neaten up their area as they’re in ground boxes, but around them was a JUNGLE of 3-ft tall grass, and of course, I got a lot of grass shrapnel in the boxes when I used the weed trimmer. Figures. But…. That will dry up quickly (and probably deposit it’s OWN seed, damn it) and my kids will grow more and be WINNERS!
Baby KALES!!!
It sort of cracks me up how much growing something makes me feel glass half-full. I’m a full blown pessimist at heart, but somehow I just feel very positive about all this. Plus, I guess my life doesn’t depend upon it - I can always hit the grocery store. Hell, I don’t even LIKE kale… but I like my baby kales! Yet to show any signs of showing up are the carrots, but it says right on the package they take a long time to germinate. No hurry carrots.
Today is going to be TOASTY! And I don’t have time to morning water, which sucks. But I think we’ll wet them all down later this afternoon and they’ll have a sauna of sorts. Cooling off by tomorrow and Wednesday.
YAY for growing things that aren’t WEEDS or grass.
