“I can’t believe you got all that from a ring,” John sighed as he sat on the pew next to Sherlock.
Sherlock shrugged, slumping down and laying his gloved hand on the pew between them. “It was simple enough once I realised he had five fiancées,” he said tiredly, frowning up at the rafters. “I don’t know how he did it. Well, obviously I know how he did it, but that much deception?” He sighed. “It just seems like more trouble than it’s worth.”
“It was still brilliant, though,” John said, laying his hand on top of Sherlock’s.
Sherlock’s studious gaze turned from the ceiling to their hands, staring at them a long moment before meeting John’s eyes. “You’re doing that out loud again,” he said with the hint of a smile.
“I know,” John said, lips quirking into a small smile. “I mean it too. Tabitha would have died if it weren’t for you.”
“What have I told you about heroes, John?” Sherlock scoffed, but nevertheless turned his hand over to twine their fingers together.
“Believe what you want,” John said, bringing their joined hands to his lips and pressing a kiss to the back of Sherlock’s, “but you are to her today.”
He gazed at the pulpit as Sherlock stared at him. After a moment, the man cleared his throat and shifted closer to him. “And what about you, John? Have I disappointed you yet again?”
John smiled and let go of Sherlock’s hand to brush a stray curl from his eyes. “I don’t think you could anymore,” he whispered, running his hand through Sherlock’s hair.
“I doubt that,” Sherlock said quietly, leaning into John’s touch in spite of his tone.
“I don’t,” John said and crushed his lips to Sherlock’s, hoping the unspoken I think I’m in love with you was understood.
“Happy Christmas, John,” Sherlock said when they parted, lips brushing against John’s, but John knew I love you too was what he meant when his eyes softened with a familiar warmth when he smiled.
