It's true that in general, men are expected to control their emotions much more than women. However, I think you may be looking at this the wrong way. I know guys, not many but enough, who are willing to show their emotions and aren't afraid of them, and they aren't ridiculed because they're comfortable with their own feelings. In general, I think if you're ok with yourself, others will be too. If you don't feel like you can cry at a sappy movie, it probably has more to do with the fact that YOU don't think it's ok, not that society thinks it's not ok.
In fact, many women find a man who's comfortable with his own emotions incredibly appealing. (and if you want to swing the other way, many gay men find a few tears attractive as well) Personally, I thought The Notebook was a Very Awful Movie. Does this make me stoic and less of a woman? I don't think so.
