Hello there,
noscans_daily!
I'm scheduled to lead a discussion of the first volume of The Unwritten this month. Sorry it's gotten a bit late though! That said, I would love to have as many of you as possible join in the discussion of the first trade, Tommy Taylor and the Bogus Identity.
For those that may not be aware of it, The Unwritten is a current series from Vertigo that, with a creative team of Mike Carey and Peter Gross, has been the recipient of much critical and (from what I gather) reader acclaim since its debut last year. It has also become one of my favourite titles since I started reading it with issue #5.
The blurb for the first trade reads as follows:
Tommy Taylor's the main character in a series of fantasy novels that have become a cultural phenomenon. Fans gather on websites and at conventions to celebrate his magical stories and hope that his missing creator, Wilson Taylor, will someday resurface to write one last adventure.
But there's one dangling plot thread: the real Tom Taylor, the son Wilson abandoned. The inspiration for the magical boy wizard, Tom is now worshipped worldwide as a literary legend made flesh.
As Tom's life begins to take on eerie and deadly parallels with Tommy's, he's drawn into a strange literary underworld where the power of storytelling is as strong as any spell.
The trade collects the first five issues and clearly marks the breaks in the story. Given this, I thought we'd discuss one or two "chapters" (corresponding to issues) a week starting this coming Saturday (the 21st). If we do one a week, that takes us all the way to Sept. 11. If we do two a week for the first four issues, and one additional week for the last issue and the brief miscellanea at the end of the book, we can have it finished on Sept. 4.
So what say you, ns_d? Which would you like to do? I'm up for either.
