How I'm (Possibly) Spending My Summer Vacation

Mar 31, 2009 18:35

I applied online for a job as a summer camp counsellor at a place up in the Muskokas (Ontario cottage country, basically). The camp is a fully accessible facility for blind and deaf-blind children and young adults, and the camp is administered by the Canadian Institute for the Blind. As a counsellor I'd be responsible for supervision and recreational programming, and I'd get some firsthand experience working with special needs children. I'd also get, y'know, experience with children. Which I lack, having never done the babysitting/hanging out with relatives' kids thing. It'd be good for me, right? *is only slightly skeered of small children and their sticky hands*

So! I'm doing a phone interview next week, and I suspect I'll have to make a trip up to the camp (which is just a wee bit south of Parry Sound, about 5hrs by bus from Toronto) for an in-person interview and/or orientation. The camp runs from June 28th to the Labour Day Weekend, and I will have to live in staff accommodations. Which I won't mind too much. I've done it before back in British Columbia, when I worked for crazy British people and lived in staff housing (an unfurnished room above the restaurant where scarfe and I worked) for four months. This seems much more appealing. As long as the camp has wireless/net access so I can administer my online course (and connect with you guys!) it'll be fine. The supervisor of my department at the college has a summer house near the camp, and she invited me over for a weekend in July. I suspect that I'll sorely need the company of adults by then. I'll also be able to take a weekend or two off so I can come home and spend some time with scarfe and the cat.

Anyway! All of this is good, I think. I was really worried about finding a summer job, and something that a) pays okay and b) is directly related to my future career field is awesome. Plus, kids! Who I am sure are fun, particularly when I'm not asking them to write essays or something. I just need to learn some good campfire songs and arts & crafts activities. (I have mentioned before that I am the most uncreative person alive, right? Well. I am).

In other news, I'm hosting the viewing chat for ds_con_envy next weekend. There'll be one chat Saturday, April 4th at 1pm EDT, and an evening chat on Sunday, April 5th beginning at 7pm EDT. We're going to be watching due South! And talking about pretty boys! And bemoaning the fact that we can't be at MJ! It'll be FUN! You can take the poll to help pick which episodes we'll be watching, and I hope that you (Yes! You! Who are reading this!) can swing by. Unless you're at MJ. In which case, I hate you.

real life adventures, i need a real job, fannish content
