Okay!
scarfe and I are off for a quickie holiday in Ottawa, which was our compromise because our original holiday plans fell through. But before I go, I present to you a list! In the past few days I have:
-read through about 80% of the dSSS stories (many of which were mah-velous)
-read through about 3% of Yuletide stories (um, I am familiar with very few media products? Although the numerous recs posts, from both the ol' f-list and on
yuletide itself, have been very helpful in pointing the way to fics based on TV shows/movies/novels/other stuff that I love but hadn't thought of reading. Reccers = love)
-watched the first five episodes of the OC
Because, yes, that was my Christmas present from
scarfe. He bought me that fancy
The OC: The Complete Series set, and we've been watching it together over the past few days.
And man, is it fun. And addictive. I'd downloaded and watched the first season years ago, and it was pretty fabulous then. I love Ryan and his little squinty-eyes, and Seth and his dorkiness, and the Cohens (COHENS!) and I even like Julie Cooper, because she fascinates me. She's, like, a creature from this whole other planet. Planet California. Also, she was in Firefly, which is awesome. (Yeah, hi, this was my shallow Christmas gift. I make no apologies). We're also noting each time Mischa Barton says, "Hey," awkwardly, and then proceeds to kill the momentum of each and every scene she's in. Also? We think she looks like
Skeletor.
The Boy also gave me a couple of novels, and two (!) bathrobes. Because they were having a 'buy one, get one half-off' sale, and because my Boy is very smart and observant and notices that I wear a bathrobe every day. *pets him on the head*
My mom called on Christmas Day to wish me a happy holiday. I have no idea where my dad and brothers were (I think they were with my grandmother, but I'm not sure) and so I haven't talked to them yet. But! When my mom called she told me a Most Hilarious story. Her husband's brother is an equestrian trainer, and he went to Belgium and bought a horse that has been winning in all kinds of dressage competitions. Apparently this horse has caught the eye of one of the celebrities he gives riding lessons to, and my mother explained it to me
like this:
Mom: "Do you know that TV show, about Superman when he was a boy?"
Me: "Um, Smallville?"
Mom: "I guess so. Anyway, Superman's wife is interested in buying the horse. Can you believe it? She's thinking of taking it to shows in California, and she - Superman's wife! - might even try out for the Canadian Olympic team!"
Me: "That's neat. Is [husband's brother] excited? He must be really proud of that horse."
Mom: "I think he's more excited that Superman's wife wants to keep training with him."
Me: "Well, who wouldn't be?"
I kept trying to get her to say, "Superman's wife" a couple more times during the phone call, but alas, she caught on to me. Oh, my mother.
And! I just got a Facebook message from my best friend from high school/university. He's coming to this Large Industrial City to do interviews at the university (he just finished med school and he's looking to specialize in psychiatry) and we'll have a chance to hang out for the first time in years and years. I am very excited about this, yo. I adore this guy, and I've really been missing all my friends and family back in British Columbia. It'll be really good to see him again.
Okay, that is my news. I want to make some kind of recs post for dSSS before I go, and then say a little bit about commenting and providing feedback to the hardworking holiday exchange authors. Because, y'know, it's not a holiday unless someone is getting a lecture. I'm not sure if I'll have time to do it before we leave for Ottawa, though, so consider this your preemptive reminder. Send people feedback! Particularly those of you who participated as authors/artists/vidders. And make recs posts, if you're able! It makes the holiday that much brighter for the people who slaved away on their stories, and it keeps people coming back and signing up again to produce those wonderful and shiny new stories next year. /public service announcement
Now, back to the OC. Who will Ryan punch next? And when will Seth finally break down and kiss him? C'mon, boys, don't disappoint me! (I also would like Sandy Cohen to be my father, plz. Best dad in the world!)
