OMG I has to read that. And see? We need this fic! It even has a title.
I'm seeing Fraser having to work on wolves instead of muskoxen because of cut-throat zoologist politics involving his father, and then there's a half-dog pup that gets rejected by the pack, and all his training says he should let nature take its course, but it follows him back to camp one day and from then on they are snarkily inseparable. And the wolves are fluffy and Ray's hair is spiky and it is Thematic.
You SO need to read that book! It's set in the remotest part of northern Canada at pretty much exactly the same time that Bob Fraser would have been stationed up there. I desperately want someone to write Bob backstory where he runs into Farley and... interesting things happen! I don't even know what. But wolves! And Inuit and hunters and caribou and governmental/bureaucratic idiocy! It is such a natural!
And if it were all to be moved up to the 1990s, I just LOVE the visual of Benton Fraser running stark naked with the caribou herd. *hearts and hearts*

Well, okay, my knowledge is varied, but what I know of ecology is A) usually only applicable in Ontario and B) often tree- or lake-related. IDEK.
I do have a friend who worked at a polar bear habitat I could harass, though.
