Whoa. This is fantastic, Kowalski so mercurial, so committed to--I wanted to say doing the right thing at the right time, but he does that by being the right thing at the right time. He's gentle with Vecchio when he needs it, rough with Fraser when Fraser needs that, and unyielding with both of them on this matter. And part of it is genuinely just him being kind / slutty / angry, but part of it is adapting who he is to fit the needs of the person he's trying to take care of. And that is so very Kowalski. I'm not saying his therapist would praise him for that sort of thing, but it's him all over.
"Shut it, Vecchio," Kowalski snapped. "We got one shot. Only one path through these woods, yeah? One chance to come out of this all in one piece. We do it together."

And the sex scene was so hot! I love how they're so primal with each other. Yum.
This was love, he thought as he watched them. He'd just never been able to recognize it before. The nasty things he'd heard in locker rooms and at church and in the bullpen of the 2-7 had it all wrong. This was love...and he liked it. He liked watching this, liked watching Kowalski and Fraser together. It made him ache. He knew what that made him, and he didn't...he didn't care.
It felt like someone had unlatched the cage door that he'd closed over his heart years ago. Something within him took flight at the realization: he felt light as air, suffused with joy. It didn't matter.
He wasn't afraid. Not anymore.
This has got to be one of the most beautiful things I've ever read. That "he didn't... he didn't care" just kills me. You've set him free.

I'm so glad you picked up on this - that's exactly how I see Kowalski. Mutable, and adaptable, and usually done for the benefit of others. It's not exactly healthy, but it is how he demonstrates his devotion. And I'm so, so glad you saw it in this story, my dear.
