I think with Dan, in the film, a lot of his pain is obvious and in the moment, whereas Duck has a lot more buried and unknown backstory.
Oh yes, definitely. Duck is *such* a mysterious character, and I really love the stories that combine an exploration of his history with the development of his intimacy with Dan. I'm glad that you liked the anger/violence aspect, too: along with the alcoholism it's not really a side we see in Wilby stories set close to the movie, since by then Duck has (apparently) overcome a lot of those issues. But I think it's interesting to look at the person he was, and in my next (hopefully much less angsty) story, I'm hoping to take a look at that aspect, about how the two halves of Duck match up and overlap.
I dunno, the whole fic has a very real, believable quality about it. Verisimilitude, or some such thing. It's not exactly enjoyable reading as such, but it's very gripping and believable
\o/ I'm perversly pleased by this - with this kind of material I'm so happy to hear that it's realistic, if not necessarily enjoyable. I mean, sometimes life hurts, right? And the happiness and contentment Duck finds later on with Dan means that much more if you consider that something like this is perhaps part of his backstory. At least, that's what I'm hoping to illustrate.
PS Write something nice and happy for us now, please?
*g* The ways of Nos are mysterious :-) I'm hoping to complete the sequel to this story and have it ready soon. It's much happier and far more optimistic about human nature, I promise.
