I've got a dSSS fic to finish and a couple of betas to do, but I'm firmly in the midst of my work-avoidance cycle. Which means I'm hunting around for new stories and going, "Oooh, look at the pretties!" Hence, a recs post.
As some of you know,
llassah has been doing a fic-a-day advent project in her LJ. She's already written and posted stories from HCL and dS, and yesterday she put up a short NC-17 story that explores a moment of connection between Fraser and Janet Morse (the woman from the episode "Bounty Hunter"). It's a terrific look at that possible pairing, sad and bittersweet and sexy. Please go
read the story and encourage, nay, demand that
llassah write more Fraser/Janet. Because hey, it's Christmas! 'Tis the season for unreasonable demands!
arrow00, author of fabulous tales like
All of Us Drown,
The Cold Equations and
Edge of Snow, broke her finger a while ago. It's put her out of commission for the last couple of months, but she returned last night with a vengeance, posting a terrific story called
A Small Mercy, which is a dark non-con involving Fraser, Victoria, and a keenly felt sense of desperation. It's written with
arrow00's usual grace and complexity, but it's not for the faint of heart. I hope she'll compose a sequel soon because, although the story ends on the perfect note, she doesn't quite put Fraser back together by the end. And this is one of those fics that begs for a happy resolution. Make sure you check out the story and guilt her into a sequel.
And finally,
risacooper (who wrote the frisky dS-does-Dracula vampire story
Date Night) turned in a fresh and original post-CotW fic called
Ain't Misbehavin'. I liked the way she reversed the traditional roles Fraser and RayK usually occupy in these types of fic: depressed and ill back in Chicago, Ray is desperately waiting for a letter from Fraser that will confirm his feelings. But Fraser keeps sending him things, like a coat, and cans of food, and old 45s. So Ray writes him back. It's the kind of unexpected story that plays with your expectations while delivering a satisfying reading experience, and I hope you'll check it out.
I'm determined to finish my dSSS story today (and do laundry, and do some marking, and enter grades, and then there's that late exam to supervise...) so I'll cut it off here. Before I go, however, I thought pics of my Christmas tree might amuse. We bought our tiny, cheap artificial tree when we moved here from BC, and the cat has had a lot of fun lately batting the bulbs off the tree and chasing them around. We did have a remarkably hideous silver star for the top, but I replaced it with
something a little more magical:
Have a merry Mountie XMas!
