Which philosopher are you?
Your Result: Nietzsche

There is no provable absolute truth. At the bottom of every philosophy there is some inspired assumption which the philosopher defends with reasons they have sought after the fact. There is no rational principle behind our world. The most noble goal in life is to create art. To live well is to be ( Read more... )

I'm Sartre/Camus. Then again, the validity of that result depends on the meaning I give it, so who really knows.

15 years ago i would have been offended: Nietzsche? That cynical, nihilist "Übermensch" bastard?!

But then i re-read Nietzsche and had to acknowledge, that my younger self was quite wrong about a lot of things concerning Nietzsche.

When Nietzsche says: "God is dead" he's not jubilant - he's just observing society (i rather think that Nietzsche is torn about this particular development himself).

About Camus/Sartre: I always liked Sartre better - he wants to do something about the world, make it better regardless of the absurdity of it all. A bit like myself. ;-)

I'm Plato. Unfortunately all of the other sophists listed alongside me are dead wrong, having been lulled into a phony-baloney structural debate by the shadow puppets. Luckily for them, I am planning a MacGyver mission into their cave, whereupon I will free them all from their shackles and bring them up into the light of the sun.

Oh, they're all dead? Never mind.

:-D

Due to certain historical developments of my grandparents i'm not very comfortable with Plato, or to be more precise, what people made of him.

(And i always liked Aristotle better anyways. Plato has... stupid hair!)

Somehow I ended up nearly Aristotle (!), second place Sartre/Camus (more expected).

This reminds me of a student research project way back when: I wrote a glowing praise of Aristotle just to get the paper back with the remark "that's not Aristotle - that's Marx!". :-D

"He was of the opinion... that his ideas were generally misunderstood and distorted even by those who professed to be his disciples. He doubted he would be better understood in the future. He once said he felt as though he were writing for people who would think in a different way, breathe a different air of life, from that of present-day men."

Sooo... Wittgenstein himself somehow forbade the concept of being "like him". ;-)

Very sneaky of him!
