Back from crazy-town

Christmas was fun this year, though it felt very much like a recession Christmas. The whole immediate family switched names, so we all got one present a piece. Knowing my terrible electronic karma, my present was a non-Apple MP3 player which is about 1/3 the cost and works just as well. Now I won't feel terrible if my wacky magnetic field causes it to die strangely within a year.

For Christmas I bought Sibyl, among other things, a Wedgewood lighter . She had mentioned a love of Jasperwear and it seemed much cooler than a plate or bowl or cup. For Christmas/my birthday Sibyl is getting me the most AMAZING present ever. Ever! Its a photo from Life magazine's newly uploaded images. The photo shows Sen. Joseph McCarthy swearing in author Dashiell Hammett. I can't think of anything cooler and I am literally counting the days until I get it.

Our trip to NYC and to North Carolina was great. When I'm less tired, I plan to write down my feelings and thoughts about spending time with my new Mother-in-law and spending time in liberal North Carolina. For right now, I will just make this observation. Though Sibyl and I have traveled out of Massachusetts, this was our first trip as a married couple. While I was fine in NYC, in North Carolina I felt amazingly vulnerable. I realized, with that sense of anxiety I manage to cultivate so well, that in that state Sibyl and I had no legal protections. We might as well have been strangers, for all the recognition we could have gotten in an emergency. Now, this was liberal North Carolina (I swear I saw as many Obama and HRC stickers in Carrboro, NC as I do in Watertown) and I don't think Sibyl's Mom dislikes me as much as she once did, but it still gave me pause. I'll mull over this some more and try to write then.

this is not your year, family vacation
