Since a couple people asked, here is the best part of The Daily Show last night (via Comedy Central's webpage), as well as a link to the whole episode (via Hulu).

And if anyone else was as infuriated by Sarah Palin's convention speech as I was, here's a good critique of her candidacy by Gloria Steinem.A few good quotes from Steinem, in case that link goes dead )

politics, feminist rage, vids

Thank you so very much. I absolutely loved reading Gloria Steinem's take on the speech. It absolutely infuriated me to watch.

Just like you, The Daily Show was the only thing that made it at all tolerable.

(and as if I didn't need another reason to respect Steinem, she is also Christian Bale's step mother. :) )

Seriously? I had no idea!

I don't think I would have survived the last 8 years without Jon Stewart.

Oh God yes! I know exactly what you mean. Jon Stewart should be sainted or something.

And yes. She married his father (who sadly passed away in 2003.)

I just edited the post to add this, FYI:

Here's an AWESOME response to Palin's slam on community organizers: http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/010538.html
Favorite quotes from this:

"[M]y dad is a community organizer, so lemme spell this out: the difference between a community organizer and a politician is that a community organizer can’t tell anyone what to do. They have to listen. So they can’t order books banned from a library to indulge their own religious sensibilities. They can’t fire someone because they didn’t follow orders to fire an estranged family member. They can’t ram through a $15 million dollar sports complex that leaves their local town groaning underneath the debt. Unlike politicians, they don’t have any power other than the power of people who want to see something changed."

"Mrs. Palin needs to be reminded that Jesus Christ was a community organizer and Pontius Pilate was a governor."

Thanks for the links, Nora! Palin's speech put me on the verge of rage. It helps to read a good critique of her candidacy. Also Jon Stewart FTW!

Prior to her speech, she seemed to me like an interesting person, albeit someone whose policies I disagreed with 100%. But I lost all respect for her after that hateful ad hominem (not to mention the obnoxious chant in favor of more drilling).

And yeah, Jon Stewart saves my sanity a lot.

The article by Gloria Steinem was also fantastic, Nora. I agree wholeheartedly with every word.

Thanks so much for these links.

I will put it simply...a few weeks ago, I was undecided when it came to the upcoming election. McCain's recent choice for VP made me 100% positive of whom I will be voting for, and here's a hint...its not him.

You're welcome.

I used to have a lot of respect for McCain, but this VP choice has pretty much eliminated that.

From a Canadian perspective....the sole selling point of this woman is her stance on guns and fetuses, correct?

The Steinem quotes are fantastic.

Yeah, pretty much. I think the prevailing theory is that McCain is not seen as conservative enough to the Christian right, and so Palin was chosen mainly to placate them.
