With thanks to
soulspirals for tagging me into this (at least, I think I'm willing to thank tem)
First, the rules:
Each player of this game starts off with 10 weird things/habits/little known facts about yourself. People who get tagged need to write a blog of their own 10 weird habits/things/little known facts as well as state this rule clearly. At the end you need to choose 10 people to be tagged and list their names.
1. Many years ago I was a trophy-winning gymkhana driver (that's a one-car-at-a-time race against the clock). Most interesting moment: realizing that the inside rear wheel was lifting a little higher off the ground each lap (in the tightest S-turn) ... and I couldn't remember how many laps I had to go. I didn't want to stop accelerating, but ...
2. My brother was the first one in our direct family line to finish college (in his 30s); my son was the first to finish college in four years right after highschool; I'm the first to have an advanced degree (achieved at 51). (Edit: that's not accurate. Actually, I went back to school at 51. BA October 1999, just after my 53rd birthday; MA August 2001, at not quite 55).
3. At 145 pounds myself, I can still lift and carry a 275-pound man across the room (even though I can no longer do it in the classic fireman's carry).
4. Since the early 1990s, I've kept my computer's keyboard set to the Dvorak layout. Within the first year I was typing faster than I ever had in 30 years of touch-typing on the QWERTY layout. Nowadays I'm bi-keyboardal, switching back and forth regularly when I'm away from my own.
5. My father died at age 57. So did my grandfather. (My husband is 59 now; whew!)
6. My father died at Christmastime. Much, much later I discovered that each of my parents had a grandparent who died at Christmas time. Does it surprise you that holiday depression shows up all over the family?
7. I wrote my first "novel" at the age of eight. It had about 13 chapters in 31 pages and concerned the great adventures of one "Wilhelmina" whose name was spelled slightly differently in each chapter. My Dad laughed at it. I didn't write another piece of fiction for almost 20 years.
8. I keep a list of the books I've read. Started keeping track sporadically in highschool, and kept at least a partial list most of the years since. I've been nearly compulsive about it for more than a decade.
9. I rebuilt the engine, transmission, and running gear of a 1932 Pontiac in 1962.
10. I used to shop in the mall that was destroyed in a chase scene in the movie "The Blues Brothers."
