Canadians laugh at what we Vancouverites call "winter". Mostly, it rains. When even a couple of inches of snow falls, there is utter chaos on the roads. Mostly this is because the temperature hovers around freezing and it's icy and slushy and yucky, but great all at the same time.
Saturday night? Honest to God blizzard. We had a foot of snow on Saturday and Sunday, and schools were cancelled everywhere on Monday, and some still on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Also, I cannot convince the following lj-cut to say: "Public 'transit' weather woes", so please disregard it if you don't care about how buses don't run when nobody wants to drive and wants to take the bus.
Trees were down, power was out. Some semblance of normality returned on Tuesday (although the temperature was -8 C with a windchill of -18 C, which is unheard of around here), and it snowed about four inches overnight, before beginning to melt today. It’ll freeze overnight, and I doubt the buses will ever start running again.
The main road into UBC? Has been closed since Saturday, so the only buses we've had are diesel and have been rerouting and coming every 15 minutes. Usually? They come every 2 or 3 minutes AND there are electric trolleys which come every 5 minutes. However, no trolleys have run in this part of town since Saturday night. CHAOS!!!
But I got to shovel lots and lots of snow off the sidewalk for half my block, and I got to take lots of pretty pictures:
Also, thanks to
quellefromage, there are lots of things that begin with C that I love. Like, say:
- Christmas
- Cheerios
- Crossword puzzles
- Canada
- the Canucks
- children
- candles
- camping
- civil engineering
- chocolate-chip cookies
AND TOMORROW IS THE LAST DAY OF CLASS BEFORE CHRISTMAS!!! I have to study like crazy because I haven't learned anything at all this semester. Eighteen days and counting...
ETA because I cannot subtract: Sixteen days and counting. The 11th thing I love that begins with C? Calculators!
