[GEN] Thor and/or Loki, Gylfaginning, kind of crackkhilariDecember 2 2012, 23:07:26 UTC
Gylfaginning is basically the framing device for a lot of the prose Edda. Gylfi is the king of Sweden and sets out to find Asgard and learn about the Aesir, but gets waylaid by them before he reaches Asgard, meets three beings who might all be Odin in disguise (their names are later given as his kennings), and is told the various stories of Norse mythology before everything vanishes and he goes home to tell the tales to others.
Thor and/or Loki reads the prose Edda and, while they don't recognise the stories about them, they do recognise the story about the curious mortal who turned up asking questions. Turns out Odin told Gylfi a lot of nonsense, with his (then infant) sons given major roles in the stories he made up.
There is much WTFing about what Odin was thinking. Especially about the horse.

Oh you know, talking myth, I've been thinking for a while Odin, Frigga and Loki may have had some interesting things going on (even discounting Frigga's affair with Odin's brothers Vili and Ve). There was this thing when Frigga tricked Odin into being tortured by a human king, and Loki of course gets tortured as well ... And Odin and Loki have this odd "blood brother" relationship which may as well be a euphemism for something two highborn men were not supposed to do with each other ...

I would not be at all surprised if myth! Odin and Loki's relationship was les than platonic, just given that Odin does what he wants and Loki does anything that moves.
Re: [GEN] Thor and/or Loki, Gylfaginning, kind of crackkhilariDecember 3 2012, 21:23:13 UTC
Loki was tied to a pointy rock, a snake dripping venom into his eyes. If that's not torture, what is it? I did not mean to imply that scene were in the same saga/poem as Odin's torture (of which there were two by the way, if counting when he hanged himself from the world tree). It's just there seems to be some fascination with torture in Asgard.
About the blood brothers, I can't tell since I don't speak Old Norse, but really like the way phospholarize put it above: "Odin does what he wants and Loki does anything that moves."
Re: [GEN] Thor and/or Loki, Gylfaginning, kind of crackkhilariDecember 3 2012, 21:35:02 UTC
Oh, sorry, I thought you meant he'd been tortured alongside Odin, since just both being tortured didn't seem to imply any particular kind of bond when it happened at different times and for different reasons.
Well, I don't speak Old Norse either. But I have read Lokasenna, which is where the blood brother thing comes up, and it's very specifically about whether Loki counts as kin not about whether he's having sex with someone present (he is, with several of them, and says so but it isn't relevant to the question of whether he gets to stay).
It's entirely possible that Loki and Odin would have sex, as phospholarize points out they'd neither of them see any reason not to. But blood brothers was a thing with a specific social function, not just an indication that Loki and Odin were close.

I have to say, the more I've been reading analysis of norse myths the more I'm coming across apparent evidence of Loki/Odin. Tumblr has a lot to offer on the subject if you can navigate past all the fan wank.

Oh my god! Why do all these awesome prompts come out when I have WIPs to work on? :(
I desperately want to do a bit of something for this, though. So if I may, awesome prompter, can I include something from Skaldskaparmal as well? I think that book contains more crazy shit that happened to Thor to round out Loki's horse thing. Gjalp's 'river', anyone?

Apologies for the lateness. Writing this was harder than I thought it would be, the setup, reconciling mythverse and marvelverse, and thinking about what the bros would have to say about it. I'm declaring this first part experimental...hopefully, it's a good tone for future parts, based on the prompt.
This is definitely AU. Post Thor, but where Loki comes to terms with his heritage without backpacking through the Void. So, no Chitauri, but the Avengers/other Midgardians may make a cameo.
** Prologue & Building the WallThe very first story little Loki Odinson ever learned to tell was the one about Gefjun and the Midgardian king who tried to have some fun at her expense. The king Gylfi offered her all the land she could plow, and she, with four huge oxen (stolen from Jotunheim, honest!), plowed an entire landmass from the sea. The look on Gylfi's face was generally described as hilarious (priceless!). It was difficult to say what was most disturbing about the story: that Sol, Mani, and Freyja were to be traded to a Jotun in exchange for construction services, or that the Aesir found this bargain acceptable, even on the word of Odin's youngest son.
"Perhaps, it's a funny metaphor about how persuasive you can be?" said Thor dryly, and grinned as if it were the cleverest joke ever made.
Loki gave him a withering look. "Yet, I can't persuade you to shut up." he said grumpily, and then read the rest of the tale with the same morbid fascination that gripped those people who liked to watch shipwrecks. As was inevitable in situations like that, all Hel went down soon enough.
"They're already panicking about summer approaching, even after agreeing to the builder's conditions!" Loki exhaled sharply, and slapped the back of his palm across the offending passage. "I swear, nobody in this realm of meatheads understands the intricacies of a good plan

*giggling like crazy*
That was brilliant. Loki talking about himself in third person, Thor not sharing Odin and Loki's strange sense of humour. And I really hadn't thought of Loki considering the Wall story in the light of the gods giving up too soon, but it makes perfect sense.

Thank you! I'm actually pretty psyched that you didn't hate it :D
I actually loved this prompt precisely because I got to think about this myth from the perspective of why marvelverse Odin would make up such a story about his youngest kid. Maybe he sees this streak of recklessness in Loki even as a child and tells a story about realistic consequences for it?
But nobody is on Loki's side more than Loki, so I figured he would sort of 'understand' Edda!Loki's motives and stand up for him.

And blood brothers was not a euphemism. I don't think it would have precluded sex, but it wasn't a reference to it.
