Hey!
Today I got up around 8:15 or so, after much self-persuasion- I’ve never wanted to sleep so badly in my life as in these past few days- and then did my hair, etc. before breakfast around 9:30. As of now, my hair-straightener works!!! Ich freue mich darauf . Breakfast consisted of typical European/German fare: Cold ham, and some other meat, various cheeses, coffee, pretzels (nice and soft, though with less salt and no butter, unlike here), and various sorts of small round rolls: Herzbrötchen, Mondbrötchen, and a third sort I can’t remember, and of course, croissants. I am going to like Germany, methinks.
Then I took a short nap, after which I practiced my flute, which my host family seemed to enjoy. Luckily for them and their neighbors, I left the picc. at home ;-). We then had to drive some relatives of the father to either a funeral or a wake, so I tagged along and my host mother took me on a short tour of the city- Brandenburger Tor (though due to some festival, we only got to see it at a distance), Postdammer Platz, Leipziger Platz, Fernsehturm (see Brandenburger Tor). We also stopped at a candy manufacturer where my host mother bought me a Berlin specialty- Mai Blätter, or May Leaves, which taste like apples. We also walked past a few museums that I’m going to have to visit, and the two brick wide line that marks where the wall used to be, and I stepped on one of the gold bricks that marks the former home of a Holocaust victim. We then stopped into a cafe, and at a most convenient time, as it started to rain, and by the time we were done, it had stopped altogether. I had a croissant, Apfelstrudel (which actually didn’t taste all that good for some reason), and Eis Schokolade, which tasted wonderful except for the whipped cream- it’s almost like a chocolate milshake w/pieces of chocolate in it. We then stopped by the Deutsche Oper to see about tickets for The Magic Flute, but it looks like I’m going to have to wait till the student rush an hour before the 7:30 show next Friday in order to get cheap tickets and a good spot. It’ll only cost 12 Euros if I wait, and the seats will prolly be better, but there’s a small risk I won’t get in, but we’ll see. Hopefully someone else will want to go with me, I’ll ask around. It’s conveniently right next to one of the U-Bahn stops.
After that, we came home, and silly me fell asleep for 2.5 hours. I’m still tired though, so I’ll be able to sleep tonight. It’s almost dinnertime though, so I’d better post this and get downstairs- it’s pasta tonight! Auf Wiederschreiben!
P.S. German phrase of the Day, per request of Joyce: Jahrein, Jahraus. Year in, Year out.
