This continues to be AMAZING, in many, many ways. Let's see:

James - he's doing the best he can, however he can, but he's definitely out of his depth with Elizabeth, the pregnancy, and the entire situation in general. Poor man, to have to play father to one's wife (especially when he'd much rather be husband and closer to friends and equals).

Elizabeth - she's still largely a teenage girl, and it shows. She's weak, but manipulative and shows that sneaky streak, that rather Machievellian tendency to disregard means in proportion to the end. The drinking problem was a real shock, but an apt one that fits the situation.
